"Ratking"

by Michael Dibdin

University spin-off puts Perugia on the technology map | ESA's ...
View over city and countryside, from Giardini Carducci, Perugia, Umbria.

Umbria was being called the new Tuscany 20 years ago, but its arty, walled capital, Perugia, is still underrated, despite budget flights to San Francesco d’Assisi airport. Bestselling crime writer Dibdin transplanted himself to the city as a university English teacher in the 1980s and in this, his first Aurelio Zen novel, the Venetian detective is unexpectedly posted to the city known for “chocolates, Etruscans, that fat painter, radios and gramophones, the University for Foreigners, sportswear”. I could recommend all of Dibdin’s 11 complex, satirical and sometimes surreal Zen books, as each is set in a different part of Italy: Vendetta in wonderful Sardinia, say, or A Long Finish among the vineyards of Piedmont.                                                                                                                                           (The rest of this article: https://www.theguardian.com/travel/2020/may/05/10-best-novels-set-in-italy-travel-elena-ferrante-naples-umberto-eco-forster-tuscany )

Hermann Hesse’s 100-Year-Old Love Letter to Trees

In the final years of his life, the great neurologist Oliver Sacks reflected on the physiological and psychological healing power of nature, observing that in forty years of medical practice, he had found only two types of non-pharmaceutical therapy helpful to his patients: music and gardens. It was in a garden, too, that Virginia Woolf, bedeviled by lifelong mental illness, found the consciousness-electrifying epiphany that enabled her to make some of humanity’s most transcendent art despite her private suffering.

When my dear friend Natascha McElhone (who narrated Figuring) was asked to choose a piece of literature with which to narrate a tour of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, for an episode of Wander — a lovely series by filmmaker Beau Kerouac, benefiting Britain’s Mental Health Foundation and helping quarantined people virtually visit some of the world’s most beloved parks and cultural institutions, accompanied by some of the world’s most beloved literary and artistic voices — Natascha chose a wondrous 100-year-old love letter to trees by Hermann Hesse (July 2, 1877–August 9, 1962), which she had saved from Brain Pickings nearly a decade ago. Originally published in Hesse’s 1920 collection of fragments, Wandering: Notes and Sketches (public library), it comes newly alive in this transportive, transcendent journey through the screen and past it, into a lush wonderland of nature’s aliveness, with two uncommonly beautiful voices as the sherpas.

2e292385-dc1c-4cfe-b95e-845f6f98c2ec.pngFor me, trees have always been the most penetrating preachers. I revere them when they live in tribes and families, in forests and groves. And even more I revere them when they stand alone. They are like lonely persons. Not like hermits who have stolen away out of some weakness, but like great, solitary men, like Beethoven and Nietzsche. In their highest boughs the world rustles, their roots rest in infinity; but they do not lose themselves there, they struggle with all the force of their lives for one thing only: to fulfill themselves according to their own laws, to build up their own form, to represent themselves. Nothing is holier, nothing is more exemplary than a beautiful, strong tree. When a tree is cut down and reveals its naked death-wound to the sun, one can read its whole history in the luminous, inscribed disk of its trunk: in the rings of its years, its scars, all the struggle, all the suffering, all the sickness, all the happiness and prosperity stand truly written, the narrow years and the luxurious years, the attacks withstood, the storms endured. And every young farmboy knows that the hardest and noblest wood has the narrowest rings, that high on the mountains and in continuing danger the most indestructible, the strongest, the ideal trees grow.
Trees are sanctuaries. Whoever knows how to speak to them, whoever knows how to listen to them, can learn the truth. They do not preach learning and precepts, they preach, undeterred by particulars, the ancient law of life.
A tree says: A kernel is hidden in me, a spark, a thought, I am life from eternal life. The attempt and the risk that the eternal mother took with me is unique, unique the form and veins of my skin, unique the smallest play of leaves in my branches and the smallest scar on my bark. I was made to form and reveal the eternal in my smallest special detail.
A tree says: My strength is trust. I know nothing about my fathers, I know nothing about the thousand children that every year spring out of me. I live out the secret of my seed to the very end, and I care for nothing else. I trust that God is in me. I trust that my labor is holy. Out of this trust I live.
When we are stricken and cannot bear our lives any longer, then a tree has something to say to us: Be still! Be still! Look at me! Life is not easy, life is not difficult. Those are childish thoughts… Home is neither here nor there. Home is within you, or home is nowhere at all.
A longing to wander tears my heart when I hear trees rustling in the wind at evening. If one listens to them silently for a long time, this longing reveals its kernel, its meaning. It is not so much a matter of escaping from one’s suffering, though it may seem to be so. It is a longing for home, for a memory of the mother, for new metaphors for life. It leads home. Every path leads homeward, every step is birth, every step is death, every grave is mother.
So the tree rustles in the evening, when we stand uneasy before our own childish thoughts: Trees have long thoughts, long-breathing and restful, just as they have longer lives than ours. They are wiser than we are, as long as we do not listen to them. But when we have learned how to listen to trees, then the brevity and the quickness and the childlike hastiness of our thoughts achieve an incomparable joy. Whoever has learned how to listen to trees no longer wants to be a tree. He wants to be nothing except what he is. That is home. That is happiness.

Alan: Thank you Randy for stating your position so clearly and honestly.

I do not expect you to approve what I am about to say but in the confines of my own conscience I am now convinced that Trump Cult will do ANYTHING necessary to win The Oval Office in November.

Trump and his cultists are not friends of democracy.

With astonishingly regularity, they tell (or repeat) brazen lies, and when not lying they cultivate ignorance or invite misinformation, simultaneously sealing themselves in "Confirmation Bias Bubbles."

"Confirmation Bias And The Power Of Disconfirming Evidence"

From now on, when I find myself in head-to-head conversation with someone who is defending Trump (or Trumpism) I will answer the first question they ask (or respond to the first stupid, ignorant or benighted statement they make) by replying, “Why are 93% of American hate groups politically conservative organizations?"

"Who Gets The Political Support Of 892 Certifiable U.S. Hate Groups?"

"And why do we know as soon as an unarmed black person is murdered in cold blood (like jogger Ahmaud Arbery shot dead in Georgia this week) that the killer (or killers) are ALWAYS politically conservative?" (Infrequently, rogue black cops will kill unarmed black men,)

"And why is it that whenever we see a Nazi or confederate flag, the person brandishing it is ALWAYS politically conservative?"

After this prelude I will answer the cultist’s specific question.

In brief, let it be known that contemporary American "conservatism" is fundamentally cruel - and worse.

A Critical Mass Of American "Conservatives" Are Stupid, Ignorant, Hateful And/Or Cruel

Here is Randy's original post:

The idea that the confrontation with Ahmaud Arbery was a citizen's arrest is the perverse attempt to cover the evil with some legal jargon that makes the ones who killed seem like they were acting justly. If any notion of self-defense appears, it will be a similarly perverse attempt to cover the evil with jargon that makes the ones who killed seem like they were being threatened. When a man is seen jogging down the road and the decision is made to grab weapons, get into the vehicle and chase down the man, confront the man because maybe he looks like someone you think committed a crime at some point, yell at the man to stop because you think you are somebody who should be able to yell at someone to stop and they should just stop, exit the vehicle with weapons in hand, at the ready...there is NOTHING that links any of this to citizen's arrest or to self-defense. NOTHING.

Excerpt: I am now convinced that Trump Cult will do ANYTHING necessary to win The Oval Office in November.

Lie. Cheat.

Wage a war to "busy giddy minds with foreign quarrels.

Perp a false flag attack. (Whether by way of collusion or not, why wouldn't Vladimir Putin "do something" to make Americans rally around the flag and the President, thus ensuring reelection of the only presidential candidate he's ever really wanted in the Oval Office? Duh.)

I mean these guys are industrial-strength criminals. They have NO moral compass and are fully prepared -- probably eager -- to do ANY goddamn thing.

At bare minimum, Trump and his lickspittle cultists are no friends of democracy. They are theocrats just as Frank Zappa prophesied.

Alan: Sometimes vulgarity is the only way to properly describe "the vulgar."
Sure, these people are children of God and -- unlike most of them -- I assume that, ultimately, we are all "saved."
But to call them "children of God" is a platitude-euphemism that does not express their reality, right here-and-now, in the midst of the jaw-dropping devastation and criminality they enable.

"You've Been Trumped" (made in 2011, 4 years before Trump's presidential campaign) is the most revealing Trump documentary.
It was produced, directed, filmed and financed in Scotland where Malignant Messiah presumed he could push around an entire native community whose ancestors lived in that place for hundreds if not thousands of years.
This film reveals "The Asshole" at his most loathesome.

The proof is in the pudding.
It must be clear to Roberts, Gorsuch and (perhaps) Alioto that Trump's passion for secrecy and "non-disclosure" is foundational to his frequent flirtation with malfeasance, and that he wants to hide his financial records, not for some "high presidential principal" but because they contain evidence that will reveal him as a common criminal like happened the last time citizen Trump's financial records were subpoenaed.
The other culprits?
Out of self-interest or self-defense, Kavanaugh and Thomas will vote on behalf of secrecy.
After all, their careers were almost destroyed by the revelation of personal secrets.

"Kamala Harris Can Be Joe Biden’s Biden," Francis Wilkinson, Bloomberg

$

The first of many rallies together?

Kamala Harris Can Be Joe Biden’s Biden

The presumptive Democratic nominee needs someone who makes voters comfortable with an old white guy at the top of the ticket.
Joe Biden is getting a lot of unsolicited advice about a running mate. Here’s mine: Find yourself another Joe Biden.
When Barack Obama was cruising to the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination in 2008, he chose someone who buttressed his political weakness. Obama’s overriding political weakness wasn’t hard to pinpoint: He was a mixed-race intellectual whose father was from Kenya.
In the midst of economic collapse presided over by a Republican incumbent, any generic Democrat was poised to win in 2008. But there was nothing generic about Obama.
Enter Regular Joe.

Obama aides have said that the final veep choice came down to Indiana Senator Evan Bayh or Biden. Bayh was white, Midwestern, cautious, reserved, moderate. Regular Joe was better. Obama’s evident comfort with Biden, and Biden’s with Obama, helped white voters find their own comfort with an unprecedented nominee. Bayh, a senator’s son, lacked the middle-class emoting gene, and hard-times sheen, that Biden has in abundance.
Biden’s more hazily defined weaknesses will come into better focus after Republicans work through their arsenal and find a few attacks that stick, more or less. He starts out with not-so-great favorable/unfavorable ratings — typically net negative by a couple points. Meantime, Republicans are already attacking his age, 77, and in the primaries young Democratic voters invariably preferred other candidates.
Despite Biden’s support among older black voters, both Russians and Republicans are likely to repeat their 2016 efforts to suppress black voter turnout; a black vote surge is far from guaranteed. Finally, Biden has a wobbly left flank, the residue of rekindled left-wing ambition and Senator Bernie Sanders’ persistent campaign against the party whose nomination he sought.
Which women — Biden has committed to pick a woman — help here?
Senator Elizabeth Warren might help close the enthusiasm gap on the left, and would make a vice president for the ages. But she soon turns 71, and would thus elevate the age issue and raise uncomfortable questions about the future. A double-septuagenarian ticket might be pushing its luck. (President Donald Trump turns 74 next month, while Vice President Mike Pence turns 61.)
Younger white contenders, such as 60-year-old Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota or 48-year-old Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, are often pitched as regional firepower to win the upper Midwest. Maybe. Each is popular in her home state. But neither provides the kind of cultural outreach that Biden provided for Obama. They reinforce his strength with white moderates rather than buttressing his vulnerabilities. And in the upper Midwest, victory may well come down to black turnout in such places as Milwaukee and Detroit.
Senator Kamala Harris of California and former Georgia legislator Stacey Abrams are more appealing in that vein. But Abrams, who was minority leader in the state House of Representatives, doesn’t meet the credential test.
On a strictly comparative basis, of course, that statement is absurd. The incumbent president shows no interest in the workings of government or issues of public policy, and never will. But Biden’s age makes the credentials of his No. 2 more salient, and women typically need more credentials than men to meet a given (manufactured) political threshold. Abrams, who has never held statewide office, falls short.
That leaves Harris, who was California’s attorney general before her current position. Harris’s presidential campaign was hugely disappointing. She seemed ideally suited to the Democratic electorate, but never won it over. The No. 2 slot entails different opportunities and demands, however.
The daughter of immigrants, a Jamaican father and an Indian mother, Harris is a youthful and energetic 55 (if not quite as youthful and energetic as Warren’s 70).  Some progressives don’t like her record as a prosecutor. But they don’t like Biden’s criminal justice record, either, so the added cost is negligible. And both records will be useful armor when a Biden White House pushes criminal justice reform.
Another former state attorney general turned senator, Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada, is also reportedly under consideration. But if Trump’s nonstop scapegoating of Mexican and Central American immigrants is not sufficient to turn out Hispanic voters, it’s hard to believe a vice presidential candidate can do much more.
Meanwhile, Harris would elevate black women from the foundation of the party to one step short of its pinnacle. She’s also a sharp inquisitor who will likely be an effective attacker on the (presumably digital) campaign trail.
Biden leads a largely unified party whose members widely consider his opponent a borderline sociopath who threatens democracy — not to mention prosperity, decency and human life. Under the circumstances, any sensible vice presidential pick will do. But Trump will be waging a culture war that, by November, will be but a few steps shy of civil war. Harris will have cultural resonance in the parts of America — immigrant, brown, black, female — that will be under sharpest attack.  She can make manifest what’s at stake in this election, especially to those underwhelmed by the prospect of another old white guy in the Oval Office.
Harris’s face is the future of the Democratic Party, and of the nation, just as Biden is the face of receding power. She complements and strengthens him. She can be Biden’s Biden.

Umair is one of two columnists whose writings I always read.

His assessment is bleak and I understand that reasonable people may choose to bypass this essay while hoping for the best.

Perhaps it is my own version of Confirmation Bias, but I have "known" since the Vietnam War that something was profoundly wrong with the United States of America and "her" national character. If the long arc of the universe bent toward justice, it seemed to me that the vast, ugly underbelly of the American ruse would be revealed.

After all, there is no statute of limitations on karma.

My Response To A Baptist Minister Friend's Facebook Post Commenting On Jogger's Killing

Frank Zappa Prophesied A Fascist Theocracy. Barry Goldwater Agrees

With astonishingly regularity, these malicious malfeasants tell (or repeat) brazen lies, and when not lying they cultivate ignorance or invite misinformation, simultaneously sealing themselves in "Confirmation Bias Bubbles."

    Don't forget...

There is no adult in The Oval Office.

And Michael Flynn (along with Steve Bannon) are on their way back to rebuild the coven.

To re-establish The Chaos Obama now speaks of openly.

"And why do we know as soon as an unarmed black person is murdered in cold blood (like jogger Ahmaud Arbery shot dead in Georgia last week) that the killer (or killers) are ALWAYS politically conservative?" (Infrequently, rogue black cops will kill unarmed black men,)

"And why is it that whenever we see a Nazi or confederate flag, the person brandishing it is ALWAYS politically conservative?"

After this prelude I will answer the cultist’s specific question.

In brief, let it be known that contemporary American "conservatism" is fundamentally cruel - and worse.

Obama Unworried About Trump Accusing Him of Crime Because Bill Barr Does Not Prosecute Criminals

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Former President Barack Obama said on Monday that he is unconcerned about Donald Trump accusing him of “the greatest crime in American history” because Attorney General Bill Barr does not prosecute criminals.

“At first, when I heard that he was accusing me of being the worst criminal ever, I have to admit I was a little rattled,” Obama said. “But then I remembered Barr’s don’t-prosecute-crimes policy, and I was pretty chill about it.”

Obama said that he was unsure what crime Trump was accusing him of committing, “but I’m pretty sure I never lied to the F.B.I. or anything as serious as that—so I’m good.”

The former President said that, if it turns out that he did commit a crime, “I’ll immediately admit that I did it, because, if history is any guide, the next thing that will happen is me not getting prosecuted.”

Reflecting on how the Department of Justice might view his illegal actions, whatever they were, Obama said, “This is an awesome time to be a criminal.”

Donald Trump held a bizarre pep rally press conference type thing on Monday. Trump and others spoke in the Rose Garden with two identical posters hung on each side of Trump’s dumb head, boasting a lie about America’s primacy in testing for the novel coronavirus. Americans with even the smallest level of critical thinking could see what was happening. Trump is attempting to sell America Trump steaks made out of Grade Z beef.
The signs, in big sans serif lettering, said: “AMERICA LEADS THE WORLD IN TESTING.” This was a last second deal and as George Orwell’s 1984 has taught us, simple bold lettering is how you drive home propaganda. Of course, simple bold lettering on a blank white background is also wildly easy to photoshop, so Twitter decided to have a field day with the tragicomedy that is this administration.
And there’s this other brutal fact.
    And the actual numerical fact.
    And this simple fact.
And here’s a recent American history lesson
But there is also this sad reality.
And remember when this was the sad fact?
    And what is being said.
    And a reminder.

    There will be props
