"Conservatives" Believe That They Are Being Harmed By Handouts When They Actually Benefit
Alan: What follows is my contribution to a friend's Facebook thread.
In yuuugely disproportionate fashion, so-called government "handouts" are transfer payments from "blue states" to "red states."
The red states, however, have been lying so long - at least since the days of slavery when they first ran off the rails -- that they no longer know what's real.
The upshot?
Red staters now lie to themselves, absolutely convinced their lies are true. (Or at least "alternatively true.")

The Borowitz Report: Trump Fires Attorney General After Copy Of Constitution Is Found On Her Computer
WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Donald Trump fired the acting Attorney General, Sally Q. Yates, after learning that she had downloaded a copy of the United States Constitution to her computer, Trump told reporters on Monday night.
According to the Trump Administration’s code of ethics, established by Steve Bannon, a counsellor to the President, “possessing, reading, or referring to the United States Constitution” is a violation that is punishable by termination.
Suspecting that Yates was in breach of that rule, Bannon seized Yates’s computer at the Justice Department and discovered that she had secretly downloaded a complete copy of the 1789 document.
“Sally Yates was hatching a covert plot to require my actions to be in accordance with the Constitution,” Trump said. “We caught her red-handed.”
Trump said he hoped Yates’s firing would send Justice Department staffers the message that “if you are caught flagrantly obeying the Constitution, you will be out of here.”
“The American people deserve an Attorney General who will come to work every day ready to flout the Constitution, and in Jeff Sessions, they will have one,” he said.

But in this case, I'm prepared to believe - til proven otherwise - that the plan (detailed at the bottom of this post) might work.
The numbers" will need nudging and the plan should be made optional although anyone who declines to accept the government's severance offer would be replaced by an older person who is still working.
It is, of course, totally unfeasable to give all 40 million people "over 50" a million dollars in serverance pay -- indeed giving a million dollars to just those 4 million people who would normally retire this year amounts to 4 trillion dollars.
However, if "we the people" decided to give 4 million imminent retirees $100,000.00, the total cost would be $400 billion - a lot, but do-able.
With this money, retirees would be obliged to spend every penny paying off (or paying down) their mortgage... or purchasing a new home, cottage or mobile.
Plus, they would have to buy a new American car - perhaps sometime over the next four years to avoid an untenable spike in production.
Not only would retirees be happy, 4 million jobs would immediately open up and the economic stimulus would go where it's needed most - construction and heavy industry.

Here is the context of this brief "distillation."
"That Eisenhower-to-Nixon memorandum, dated February 5, 1958, was shown to only a few people, but it was leaked. When Eisenhower, in March, was asked about it at a news conference, he said, “We are trying just to say that we are trying to carry out what normal humans of good faith having some confidence in each other would do in accordance with the language of the Constitution.” As to whether these transfers of power could lead to “a sort of musical chairs,” he replied, “I think it means when the inability is removed he resumes his duties,” although he saw the potential problem it posed. He said, “I admit this: if a man were so deranged that he thought he was able, and the consensus was that he couldn’t, there would have to be something else done, no question.”
Clearly, the meaning of words is always debatable. And conditioned by "fake news,""alternative facts,""right wing radio" and the atomization/isolation/self-confirmation of social media there is now real doubt that America, as a society, can define "normal humans" and "good faith."
It is also evident that America is sorely divided and that "the two sides" of the nation's "political aisle" no longer have "some confidence in each other."
The current state of our body politic recalls the myth of Babel and how one common language became confounded so that people no longer understood each other.
Usually, the linguistic confusion of Babel is explained by sudden replacement of the common language with multiple tongues.
But it is more useful -- more reasonable and epistemologically sound -- to posit that Americans'"spoken words" remain the same while their semantic content has changed so radically that "any" two individuals' interpretation of "freedom" will be as divergent as "askatasuna" and "svoboda," the corresponding Basque and Czech words for "freedom."
No longer do "you" say "tomato" and "I" say "tomahto."
Instead, we both say "tomato."
But what "you" hear is "askatasuna," and what "I" hear is "svoboda."
To "feel" your way more deeply into this linguistic and lexical dilemma consider the words "patriotism,""democracy,""oppression,""division,""liberty,""justice."
Or consider whole passages like Abraham Lincoln's summary of self-destruction.
Honest Abe is not splitting hairs between "tomato" and "tomahto."
Lamentably, with the nation overshadowed by babel-confusion, conservatives construe liberals as the source of destruction while liberals see that the opposite as true.

We continue to use the same words but the perceived meaning of those words is as different as "night and day,""heaven-hell,""salvation-damnation,""good-evil,""God-Satan." (I am reminded of Chesterton's argument that "all wars are religious wars.")
From my "side" of the fence, it is evident that Trump is a deranged sociopath, consumed by narcissism and that his only interest -- sweet-talking rhetoric aside -- is co-terminous with his bloated self-interest.
From the other side of the fence, these same characteristics are ascribed to Hillary.
But there remains a definable "hinge" by which we can define "un-hinged."
We are starting to see this realization play out as Trump sides with Putin and Assange, impugns America's intelligence community, claims to know more than the generals and starts tabulating yet another "enemies list."
The hinge is this.
During the 2016 presidential campaign, half of America was effectively blinded by anger at Hillary Clinton, anger whose intensity was rooted in the ongoing en-chant-ment of The Noise Machine combined with conservatives' near-total disregard for facts, proportionality and careful, intellectually rigorous analysis.
Blinded by anger, American conservatives have been unable, until now, to escape their obsessive focus on Hillary who, in their view -- and with no actionable evidence -- needed to be "locked up."
Now that Hillary-Benghazi-Emails-Private-Server have boiled away in the political heat -- and it is crucial to remember that conservatism's 25 year obsession with the Clintons is no longer a cause célèbre -- Trump supporters can no longer focus on "non-existent" Hillary, The Evil One who drove them to distraction.
No longer distracted, American conservatives are "seeing" Trump for the very first time, and freed from their former tunnel vision, they begin to realize that it was Trump, not Hillary, who should have been targeted as a condemnable criminal --- the Trump "University" scam-scandal being just one case in point.

This scene from Cool Hand Luke reveals that the three guys on the bluff are determined to torture a human being because they consider themselves "righteous" and they "know" that Paul Newman "has got it coming." Indeed that "hellish torment" is his just dessert.

I am saying that everyone who participates in torture and torment subcribes to conservatism.

Alan: I love "the poorly uneducated" too, but not the ones who deliberately shirked learning because they saw it as elite, effete or in some way inferior to the middle school opinions of people ignorant enough to approve white nationalism or some "shade" of racism.
If you do not understand the Isaac Asimov quotation below -- or if you are miffed by it -- know that you are part of Democracy's biggest problem -- i.e., an uneducated electorate -- and in no way are you part of the solution.
It is every citizen's duty to become well-informed, and one dependable measure of being well-informed is to acknowledge NPR -- whatever its shortcomings -- as a more trustworthy news source than talk radio or Bubba's Facebook page.

Vanishingly Remote Risk Of Terrorism (Coupled With Racial Prejudice) Evokes Fascist Takeover
Alan: The foremost appeal of fascism is the promise that an autocratic leader will take every repressive measure necessary to eliminate danger, thus making the sheeple safe.
But are really in danger? Getting behind the wheel of a car is many thousands of times more dangerous than the threat of terrorist carnage on American soil. In fact, driving a car is the single most dangerous thing we do every day.
The fundamental delusion of fascism (and fascists) is that danger can be eliminated by oppression or, for that matter, by any other means.
Danger cannot, under any circumstance, be eliminated.
To some significant extent, Life, by its nature, is risky business.
In a sane society it is necessary to assess risk and then take reasonable measures that offer real promise of containing risk in a statistically meaningful way.
Here in the United States, more Americans are killed by toddlers than terrorists.
Here in the United States, nine (9) times as many Americans are killed by cops as are killed by terrorists.
Ask yourself this question.
Do you (or any of your friends, relatives, acquaintances) directly know someone who was killed (or injured) by a terrorist?
Now ask yourself this question.
Do you (or any of your friends, relatives, acquaintances know someone who was killed (or injured) in an automobile accident.
And finally, consider this.
In western Europe, the number of people killed in car crashes per mile traveled is half the number in the United States. By imitating Western Europe's traffic laws (and other traffic practices) we could cut the number of American road fatalities by 17,500 (and probably reduce the number of significant vehicular injuries by 150,000).
Will you - or anyone know - lift a finger to impede this preventable carnage?
