NASA Creates Brilliant Video To Illustrate The Role Of CO2 In Climate Around The World

Computer model of carbon dioxide moving around the globe
NASA has released an amazing new video: A Year in the Life of Earth's CO2. It brilliantly illustrates how carbon dioxide travels around the world. The mesmerizing computer model makes it crystal clear that all countries of the world will have to act together to combat climate change:
More on the computer model they used to provide a new portrait of carbon dioxide:
An ultra-high-resolution NASA computer model has given scientists a stunning new look at how carbon dioxide in the atmosphere travels around the globe.
Plumes of carbon dioxide in the simulation swirl and shift as winds disperse the greenhouse gas away from its sources. The simulation also illustrates differences in carbon dioxide levels in the northern and southern hemispheres and distinct swings in global carbon dioxide concentrations as the growth cycle of plants and trees changes with the seasons.
Scientists have made ground-based measurements of carbon dioxide for decades and in July NASA launched the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) satellite to make global, space-based carbon observations. But the simulation – the product of a new computer model that is among the highest-resolution ever created – is the first to show in such fine detail how carbon dioxide actually moves through the atmosphere.
A key part of the NASA report:
In the spring of 2014, for the first time in modern history, atmospheric carbon dioxide – the key driver of global warming – exceeded 400 parts per million across most of the northern hemisphere. Prior to the Industrial Revolution, carbon dioxide concentrations were about 270 parts per million. Concentrations of the greenhouse gas in the atmosphere continue to increase, driven primarily by the burning of fossil fuels.
Emphasis added. The evidence is clear—humans are having a dramatic effect on climate change—and we are all going to have to work together to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels before it's too late.

Patriotism is proud of a country's virtues and eager to correct its deficiencies; it also acknowledges the legitimate patriotism of other countries, with their own specific virtues. The pride of nationalism, however, trumpets its country's virtues and denies its deficiencies, while it is contemptuous toward the virtues of other countries. It wants to be, and proclaims itself to be, "the greatest", but greatness is not required of a country; only goodness is. -Sydney J. Harris, journalist and author (14 Sep 1917-1986)

Mike Huckabee's biblical defense of bigotry crumbles on live television

Mike Huckabee was a guest on Morning Joe with Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski. Instead of making his case for "religious freedom" and the freedom to be a bigot, his argument was quickly and summarily dismantled by the clearly agitated hosts. The best part? They used the Bible to make their point. An increasingly squeamish Mike Huckabee was boxed right into a corner.

We Are Known By The Company We Keep: Evangelicals LOVE Donald Trump

"True Believer? Why Donald Trump Is The Choice Of The Religious Right," NPR

Donald Trump And The Fervent Self-Deception Of Christian Conservatives
"I've come to see somebody that's not scared to say what he thinks, and he thinks like I think," gushed Joe Smart, a security guard who was at a Trump event in Greenville, S.C., last month. "He's religious, and from what I hear, he's going to change the White House back to Christianity. I pray every night that our nation will come back to God."

It's all left prominent evangelical leaders in disbelief.
"Trump has made his living as a casino mogul in an industry that preys on the poor and incentivizes immoral and often criminal behavior," said Dr. Russell Moore, head of the influential Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission.
Moore offered a searingly blunt assessment of the current GOP front-runner in an interview with NPR. "He's someone who is an unrepentant serial adulterer who has abandoned two wives for other women," he added. "He's someone who has spoken in vulgar and harsh terms about women, as well as in ugly and hateful ways about immigrants and other minorities...
Audrey Lindsey of Spartanburg, S.C., said she hadn't heard those comments, but believed his later exhortations of his faith. "He says his favorite book is the Bible," Lindsey said, "and I believe that's what it's going to take — good, honest Christian people praying for this country."...

Trump recently agreed with an interviewer's suggestion that a good Supreme Court nominee would be his sister, Maryanne Trump Barry, a judge on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. But she supports abortion rights. Many of Trump's rivals and conservative groups, like Concerned Women for America, pounced.
Trump talks fondly of growing up going to Sunday School at First Presbyterian Church in the Jamaica section of Queens, N.Y. When asked by NPR where he currently attends, he said he goes to Marble Collegiate Church in Manhattan.
Yet the church says he's not an active member.

What's more, Marble Collegiate is part of the Reformed Church in America — typically considered more of a mainline rather than evangelical denomination. The church issupportive of gay rights, according to its website.

Joe Biden: The Only Upper-Echelon American Politicians Who Learned Compassion Through Pain

Dear Chris,

I enjoyed our conversation last night. Thanks.

It was also a treat to hear you and Tom jam on motorcycle racing.

I am writing to thank you for recommending Joe Biden's interview with Stephen Colbert.

Biden is the only upper echelon American politician who impresses me as having learned compassion from pain.

Joe Biden's Family Tragedies

I marvel at the number of American politicians who secure their position by holding compassion in contempt.

American conservatives have gotten so well-armored against the apt adjective "meanspirited" that I now resort to "uncharitable."

There is not a whit of caritas in them.

If you would like to recommend the Biden video to others, here's a link: http://paxonbothhouses.blogspot.com/2015/09/joe-bidens-raw-emotional-interview-with.html

I do not know your Mom's politics but she and Joe feel like kindred spirits.

Kentucky clerk Kim Davis won't block licenses, but won't issue them

MOREHEAD, Ky. — Kim Davis, the embattled Kentucky county clerk, at the center of the dispute over gay marriage and religious liberty, appeared to back down from the threat of more jail time Monday, saying while she still refuses to authorize marriage licenses, she will not interfere with a deputy clerk who began providing them more than a week ago.
Davis returned to work Monday, her first time in the office since her high-profile release from the Carter County Detention Center last week. Emotional and flanked by her son, Nathan, Davis read a statement outside the courthouse, bemoaning that her deputy clerks have been caught in the middle of her case.
"If any of them feels that they must issue an unauthorized license to avoid being thrown in jail, I understand their tough choice and I will take no action against them," she said. "However, any unauthorized license they issue will not have my name, my title or my authority on it. Instead, the license will state that they are issued pursuant to a federal court order."
Davis said she faced a choice between her conscience and freedom, and prayed hard about her decision. She raised "great doubts" that licenses issued without her authority are valid but called it a remedy to reconcile her conscience with the federal injunction ordering her to provide the forms.
"I don't want to have this conflict. I don't want to be in the spotlight. And I certainly don't want to be a whipping post," she said. "I am no hero. I'm just a person who has been transformed by the grace of God."

Davis reiterated her plea for Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear and legislators to rewrite state marriage laws to accommodate her religious objections. She argued that millions of others in the public and private sector face similar conflicts.
"Are we not big enough, a loving enough and a tolerant enough state to find a way to accommodate my deeply held religious convictions," she asked.
At least one deputy clerk, Brian Mason, has been issuing licenses since U.S. District Judge David Bunning jailed Davis for contempt of court. Mason said last week that he will continue to provide the forms even if Davis orders him to stop. Around 10 couples — mostly same-sex — have obtained the paperwork so far.
Bunning released Davis from jail on Tuesday, warning her not to interfere with any deputy who has issued licenses in her absence. Deputy clerks also were called on to file regular status updates with the court.
Mary Hargis, from the Rowan County Rights Coalition, which protested Davis' policy for weeks, said the case was due to bigotry and that to equate Davis with civil rights icons — as many have sought to do — is a "travesty."
"When she willfully decided that she was going to disobey the law, she became a criminal. For whatever reason, all criminals have an excuse for their actions."
Ante Pavkovic, a pastor from North Carolina who has protested same-sex marriage outside the courthouse for about two weeks, appeared conflicted over the announcement Monday. He said Davis' attorney is probably trying to protect her but not addressing the larger issues of principle. He said it's hard to know whether Davis backed down without talking with her first.
"On appearances, it is not enough," he said. "It's yielding our republic to a rogue Supreme Court ... and that's a big mistake if that's what it is."
Timeline of dissent
Soon after the Supreme Court ruled to allow gays to marry, Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis decided to stop offering any marriage licenses through her office.
• June 26Supreme Court rules 5-4 that states must recognize and allow same-sex marriage. Later that Friday, Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear directs county clerks to comply.
• June 29Davis declines to issue marriage licenses on Monday, saying the new law of the land conflicts with her religious beliefs.
• July 2. American Civil Liberties Union sues Davis and Rowan County on behalf of four couples, two gay and two straight.
• July 8. Some county clerks ask for a special session of the Kentucky Legislature to pass a bill to accommodate those who have religious reasons for not issuing the licenses. Beshear says no, in part because of the expense.
• Aug. 12U.S. District Judge David Bunning says Davis must issue licenses to same-sex couples.
• Aug. 27The U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals declines to grant Davis a stay of Bunning's decision.
• Sept. 1The Supreme Court refuses to grant Davis a stay.
• Sept. 3Davis is found in contempt of court and taken to jail.
• Sept. 8. Davis is released from jail.

Dear Fred,

Thanks for your email.

I pretty much agree.

You remind me of a pundit's comment concerning drivers' anger at traffic jams:

Lamentably, "in an avalanche no individual snowflake accepts responsibility."

It has been a hard (ongoing) lesson to realize that we humans are, at bottom, self-interested animals.

I've said this a hundred times with regard to immigrants. It doesn't matter who they are, it doesn't matter where they come from, and it doesn't matter how many of them are coming.
The only thing that matters is the rate, or the flow. If immigrants come at a steady rate, they can be helped and absorbed at a sustainable pace. But when too many people come at one time, you get a reaction, you get people screaming "they're taking over." I am only describing human nature. People shut down.
Refugees are supposed to come at a steady pace, instead of like a stampeding mob. As if they were capable of doing that. But they never come at a sustainable pace, but they come all at once, in a panic, in a flood, and we are overwhelmed and we shut down.
People are like that.
On a personal note, don't project your guilt on other people. If you feel guilty, like you should be doing something about this, then go out and do it. Skip the finger pointing. If you need someone to blame, blame me.

Is An Innocent Man About To Be Executed?

Dear MoveOn member,
Oklahoma plans to execute an innocent man this Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.1
Governor Mary Fallin has the power to stop this deadly mistake by issuing a 60-day stay of execution—but we need to act fast to save Richard Glossip.
Can you call Gov. Fallin right now? Tell her: "Don't execute an innocent man. Grant Richard Glossip a 60-day stay of execution."
Here's the number:

By saying Richard masterminded the murder, Sneed avoided the death penalty and now is serving a life sentence in a medium-security prison.2
Because Richard didn't have the money to hire good lawyers, he ended up on death row. This is someone whose record was so clean that he had never even had a speeding ticket.3
But now, one of the best death penalty lawyers in the nation has taken up Richard's case pro-bono, and this morning—two days before the scheduled execution—he released new evidence showing that "Sneed lied to save his own life."4
After learning about some of the new evidence, a juror from Glossip's trial stated, "If the defense would have presented the case that they are presenting now in the original trial...I would not have given a guilty verdict."5
Unbelievably, Gov. Fallin says she's going forward with the execution.6 It's up to each of us to express our utter outrage, disgust, and heartbreak that our government would execute an innocent man—and to compel the governor to act. All we are asking for is 60 days to give Richard an opportunity to be represented in a way that will save his life.
Please call Gov. Fallin right now—we have no time to spare. Her number is 405-521-2342.

Medieval Skeleton Found Dangling From the Roots of a Fallen Tree

After a violent storm ripped through the Irish town of Collooney, locals were shocked to discover the remains of a 1,000-year-old skeleton hanging from the roots of a fallen tree.
The body, which belonged to a young man who appears to have died a violent death, was found beneath a 200-year-old beech tree. In a scene that must have been quite macabre, the upper part of the skeleton was found raised in the air within the tree’s root system, while the legs remained in the ground.

The leg bones of the Collooney skeleton still embedded in the ground (Credit: Thorsten Kahlert).
Irish Archaeology reports:
Preliminary analysis has indicated that the remains consist of young man who was between 17 and 25 years old when he died. His bones contained several injuries which had been inflicted by a sharp blade, possibly a sword or knife. He had obviously suffered a violent death, but whether these wounds were related to an ancient battle or a personal dispute remains unknown. The body was subsequently buried in a shallow east-west oriented grave and radiocarbon analysis indicates that this occurred sometime between 1030 and 1200 AD.
Archaeologists working for Sligo-Leitrim Archaeological Services will continue to investigate the site in hopes of finding more clues.

Egyptian armed forces mistakenly open fire on Mexican tour group; 12 killed

At least 12 people were killed and 10 injured in Egypt's southwestern desert Sunday when security forces mistakenly fired on a group of Mexican tourists, Egyptian officials said.
The Mexican Foreign Ministry confirmed the incident and said at least two of the dead were Mexican nationals. It said in a statement that the victims were still being identified, and Foreign Ministry personnel were working with the families of the victims.
Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto posted a statement on his Twitter feed Monday morning saying his government "condemns these acts against our citizens" and demanding a thorough investigation.
A joint military-police force was pursuing "terrorist elements" in the area and fired on four cars that turned out to be carrying tourists, according to Egypt's Interior Ministry. The ministry said the victims were Egyptian and Mexican.
Egyptian officials claim the safari convoy had wandered into a restricted area of the western desert. The tour company involved "did not have permits and did not inform authorities," Rasha Azazi, a spokesperson for the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism, told the Associated Press, adding that any trips to that area are required to be cleared by officials.
"They were not supposed to be there," she said, but could not provide further information on the circumstances of the shooting.
Mexican Foreign Minister Claudia Ruíz Massieu was in contact with Egypt's ambassador to Mexico and also demanded an investigation and explanation of what happened, the Mexican statement said. She also demanded the support of Egyptian authorities for Mexican nationals being transported to Cairo.
Jorge Alvarez Fuentes, Mexico's ambassador to Egypt, and consular representatives visited the wounded at the Dar el-Fouad Hospital in suburban Cairo, and Fuentes had interviewed five survivors, the Foreign Ministry statement said. It did not provide details on the survivors' accounts of the incident.
Egypt's western desert is popular among safari enthusiasts, but has not been known as a hotbed of militant or insurgent activity. Police and military there have primarily been concerned with combatting smuggling along Egypt's long and porous border with Libya.
Cairo has been battling an Islamic insurgency on its eastern flank in the Sinai peninsula for years; attacks targeting army and police in Sinai escalated and spread to the mainland after the July 2013 military ouster of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

"Since God Doesn't Heal Amputees, Humankind Will. The Future Of Christian Theology"

"Trust me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or at least believe on account of the works themselves. I assure you that whoever believes in me will do the works that I do. They will do even greater works..."

Gospel of John 14:11-12

Making Money Off Miracles: The Gospel of Televangelists

A few weeks ago on Last Week Tonight, John Oliver exposed televangelists—evangelical preachers whose sole purpose is to get on TV and ask for funds for their ministries—who prey on the sick, poor, and desperate in order to line their own pockets, funding lavish lifestyles that include mansions, airplanes, cars, vacations, and more.
Toward the end of the segment, which quickly went viral, Oliver revealed that he had incorporated his own church without any restrictions. Called “Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption,” it worships the deity of the powerful and lenient IRS. Oliver said he would begin accepting “seed money” to build his new church, which would help him to cure people’s ailments.
If that seems like a comedic bit, perhaps the most terrifying thing should be how little John Oliver had to act for the sketch. He merely repeated things that real televangelists, such as Creflo DollarRobert TiltonT.D. JakesJoel Osteen, and Kenneth Copeland, have actually said.
Those televangelists follow the model of “prosperity gospel” in which they believe that wealth is a sign of God’s favor, and that by simply believing and praying for money—in addition to donating copious amounts of money to various Christian ministries—is what will take you there. This is actually a rare belief among fundamentalists, with only 7 percent of evangelical Protestant leaders saying that they believe in the concepts of prosperity theology. The 7 percent who do, however, have amassed a large amount of wealth, power, and huge audiences to beg for donations.
Not surprisingly, most of the victims of this harmful prosperity doctrineare those in the poor and working class—it’s like a monstrous pyramid scam of religions. They see prosperity theology as a supernatural lottery, which isn’t shocking, considering that 61 percent of people who play the lottery are from the poorest one-fifths of the population. But these televangelists claim that your faith, your very soul, is tied into giving “positive confessions.” And the fact that you are poor isn’t just bad luck: it’s not having enough faith, not praying enough, and, of course, not giving a big enough donation to their ministry.
How do televangelists get away with this? It’s easy. It’s the same method the Church of Scientology employs: getting 501(c)(3) status and declaring your corrupt, poor-robbing business model a “ministry,” which, as John Oliver demonstrated, is a painfully simple process. They then ask for large tax-exempt donations and keep as much of it as possible to buy acres of landmansions, and jets worth $65 million. Joel Osteen, pastor of megachurch Lakewood Church in Texas, for example, lives in a 17,000 square foot home worth $10.5 million dollars. His entire net worth is estimated to be about $40 million.
The greed of scheming televangelists is just another symptom of a predatory line of thinking among the rich and powerful driven to further atrociousness by attaching the name of God to their actions. Just as Josh Duggar preyed on his sisters and hid his infidelity behind his position of power and fame, offering an apology only when he was caught, there’s a level of horrific hypocrisy espoused by those who claim to live for God and then go on to repeatedly take advantage of the people around them.
Josh isn’t the only one. Christian vloggers Sam and Nia Rader are willing to go to untold depths to gain wealth and fame at the sake of the privacy of their families: from Sam stealing his wife’s urine to get a positive pregnancy test to immediately broadcasting the details of their miscarriage for page views—over 4.6 million of them, in fact. In a faith-based vlogging community where videos about babies can make the difference for gaining higher levels of profit, it seems recording your children’s every move with or without their consent is just another way to get more money under the guise of evangelism (all the while, like Josh Duggar, having a paid Ashley Madison account). Unfortunately, far too many evangelicals continue to exploit vulnerable people to gain more wealth.
My grandparents, now retired, once owned a church bookkeeping business. The majority of their clients were small churches trying to stay afloat who needed help figuring out how to get started, keep online records when they didn’t know how to use computers, and make sure their bills were paid and forms were filed. However, they did experience their fair share of money-minded ministers who were out there hustling. A ceremonial sword given to them by Jim Bakker, a televangelist known for his involvement in sex scandals and fraud, hung proudly in their office.
One of their occasional clients was a man by the name of Phil Driscoll, a former resident of my hometown in Cleveland, Tennessee. A Grammy-winning trumpeter who performed with the likes of Joe Cocker and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, he was jailed in 2007 for a year after he was caught using his gospel music ministry as a means of personal tax evasion. But he saw this as a trial given to him by God, of which he was the hero. He later turned his experiences into a movie, which starred Danny Glover.
Even after his release, Driscoll returned to his old ways: using the “parsonage exclusion” IRS tax exemption to defend his right to own two large homes, free of taxes and completely paid for through his ministry. Just like God intended.
When I was in college, I worked at my grandparents’ business. It was a nice way to earn some money on a part-time basis without having to work retail or at a restaurant. But it was considerably dull. On a monthly basis, churches would send in their emptied tithe envelopes (these are envelopes for money in the church pews that you fill out and place into the offering plate during the offertory call) and I would enter their names and the amount into the system to record how much they’d received and who donated. At the end of the year congregants received yearly reports detailing their donation amounts. This meticulous record keeping is important to maintain the church or ministry’s 501(c)(3) status.
Usually, this was like any other monotonous and boring data entry job. Occasionally, though, my work would lend itself to saddening revelations. Some people would donate $5 and write on the envelope, “This is all I have.” Sometimes, when checking off boxes for what the donation was for on the envelope, people would write “praying for debt release” in the “other” category. Whatever was being preached in those services, the people there believed that if they gave away money—all of their money, in some cases—they’d somehow be freed from the financial burdens in their lives. The ideas behind prosperity theology had seeped into sermons of everyday churches. Meanwhile, the ministers who walked into my grandparents’ office for meetings drove incredibly expensive cars and wore elaborate 3-piece suits.
The church was meant to exist to serve all its people—not to support the wealth of its leaders. Of course pastors should be paid a salary, and if a church truly devotes itself to the causes of feeding the poor and helping its members, then it deserves a tax-exempt status. Churches, and subsequently, the freedom of religion, are certainly a cornerstone of our country. But because the IRS makes tax exemption so easy to obtain and keep, it has led to a modern-day indulgences system—the trading of money for miracles and blessings.
Televangelists conduct themselves like a twisted multi-level marketing model where the more you buy in, the richer the people are up top. But even the most evil of money-grubbing corporations don’t enjoy the benefits of tax exemption, and none of them are promising to cure you from illness or erase your debt in exchange for your hard-earned money. Most importantly, none of them claim to do so in the name of God, as if you could supernaturally control him and earn his blessings by throwing money at ministers with bad hair and plastic smiles and multi-million dollar estates.
These televangelists do not speak for God. In Matthew 6:24, Jesus stated, “You cannot serve both God and money.” Directly responsible for forcing faithful Christians into increased poverty by squeezing money from them to finance their own extravagant lifestyles, televangelists are in defiance of the very God they proclaim to serve.

All Upside Oregon ‘Motor Voter’ Law In Context. (Republicans Should Be Ashamed)

California Is About To Fix Democracy

Mother Jones

On Thursday, California's Senate advanced a new reform bill that would automatically register all state residents to vote when they apply or renew their driver licenses.

Residents will also be able to opt out of automatic registration.

The 24-15 vote, which follows the Assembly's approval in June, now awaits the signature of Gov. Jerry Brown, who is expected to adopt the measure. If signed, California will become the second state in the country to have automatic voter registration, after Oregon.

Supporters of the bill say it would dramatically increase voter turnout in
the state.  Secretary of State Alex Padilla reminded her fellow lawmakers on Thursday, nearly 6.7 million California residents remain unregistered, despite being eligible to do so.

"We ought to do anything and everything possible to ensure that people participate," Padilla said ahead of the vote.

In March, Oregon became the first state to pass an automatic registration law. Soon after that, lawmakers in 17 states proposed similar measures. While speaking to an audience in Texas back in June, Hillary Clinton announced her support for universal automatic registration.

California Republicans voted against the bill, citing warnings of potential voter fraud. However, such claims have been overwhelmingly disproved. Restrictive voting laws, as demonstrated in the last midterm elections, have been found to create significant obstacles that prevent minorities and the poor from voting.

Diet Heavy On Olive Oil Cuts Breast Cancer Risk by 62%
The fight against breast cancer may begin in the kitchen. A new study suggests that women can dramatically reduce their risk of the disease by following a version of the Mediterranean diet that goes heavy on extra virgin olive oil.
Data from a large, randomized clinical trial show that women who did so were 62% less likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer compared with women who were simply asked to reduce the overall amount of fat in their diets. The results were published Monday in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.

The clinical trial, known as PREDIMED, was designed to assess the cardiovascular benefits of the Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish and olive oil. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups – Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra virgin olive oil, Mediterranean diet supplemented with mixed nuts, or a regular low-fat diet.
After tracking nearly 7,500 people for about five years, the researchers had compelling evidence that those who were on either type of Mediterranean diet had better heart health than their counterparts who weren't. The trial was ended in 2010.
Although the study’s main focus was cardiovascular disease, researchers also tracked the incidence of five types of cancer, including breast cancer. Among the 4,282 women who participated in the trial, there were 35 confirmed cases of invasive breast cancer. (Cases ofductal carcinoma in situ, or Stage 0 breast cancer, were not tracked.)
The risk of being diagnosed with invasive breast cancer was highest for women who were advised to eat less fat – 2.9 cases for every 1,000 person-years. That compared to a diagnosis rate of 1.8 cases per 1,000 person-years for women who were on the Mediterranean diet with extra nuts and a rate of 1.1 cases per 1,000 person-years for women who were on the Mediterranean diet with additional extra virgin olive oil.
In the raw analysis, the women in the extra virgin olive oil group were 62% less likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer during the course of the study than were women in the regular low-fat group. After accounting for a variety of factors such as the age, body mass index, exercise and drinking habits of the women, the breast cancer risk was 68% lower for the extra virgin olive oil group compared with the low-fat group.

The women who followed the Mediterranean diet with extra servings of walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds were about 40% less likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer than their counterparts on the low-fat diet. However, considering the small number of breast cancer cases, that difference wasn’t large enough to be statistically significant.
The researchers repeated their analysis without the women who were diagnosed with breast cancer during the first year of the study – presumably before the dietary interventions had a chance to make a difference. The results were “hardly changed,” the researchers wrote. The same was true when they included reported breast cancer cases that weren’t confirmed by examining biopsied cells.

The women in the extra virgin olive oil-heavy Mediterranean diet group got 22% of their total calories from the oil, on average. However, the researchers wrote that getting at least 15% of total calories in the form of extra virgin olive oil “seems to be instrumental for obtaining this significant protection.”
There are lots of reasons to think that extra virgin olive oil could be a potent cancer-fighter, the study authors wrote. It is rich in oleic acid, a substance that helped kill breast cancer cells in laboratory experiments. It’s also high in squalene, a compound that has antioxidant effects in breast cells.

Extra virgin olive oil also contains several polyphenols with pharmacologic effects. Among them, oleocanthal has been found to block the spread of breast cancer cells; oleuropein seems to induce breast cancer cells to self-destruct; hydroxytyrosol counteracts damageto breast cells caused by reactive oxygen species; and lignans have been associated with a reduced breast cancer risk.
The study is the first prospective randomized clinical trial to see whether a Mediterranean diet can offer women protection from breast cancer. But more trials are needed to get a better understanding of the link between the two, the researchers wrote.
In particular, they wrote, future studies should include more women and more cases of breast cancer. All of the women in the PREDIMED study were white, between the ages of 60 and 80 and had Type 2 diabetes or at least three risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high blood pressure, too much “bad” cholesterol or a history of smoking. That means these findings may not apply to women who are younger, in better health or from other racial groups.
Even so, women would have nothing to lose – and potential much to gain – by eating more like the people in the Mediterranean, according to Dr. Mitchell H. Katz, director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
The Mediterranean diet “is known to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and is safe. It may also prevent breast cancer,” he wrote in an editor's note that accompanied the study. “We hope to see more emphasis on Mediterranean diet to reduce cancer and cardiovascular disease and improve health and well-being.”

Indoor pesticides linked to childhood leukemia, lymphoma

Researchers said that pesticides may influence other types of cancer as well.
By Stephen Feller   |   Sept. 14, 2015
BOSTON, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Children who are exposed to insecticides indoors are nearly 50 percent more likely to develop leukemia or lymphoma, according to a new study that linked exposure to the disease.
Both diseases are rare in children, however the incidence of childhood cancer has increased in the last several decades, even as more children survive them because of better treatment, according to the National Cancer Institute.
In the United States, about five out of every 100,000 children are diagnosed with leukemia, and overall 32.1 of every 100,000 children are diagnosed with some type of cancer.
"Although pesticides are necessary for the elimination of insects and other pests, the toxic chemicals used in agriculture and for public health can be harmful or even deadly in children," researchers said in a press release. "Exposure to residential indoor insecticides but not outdoor insecticides during childhood was significantly associated with an increased risk of childhood cancers, including leukemia and lymphoma, but not childhood brain tumors."
The researchers reviewed data from 16 previous studies on the possible association of childhood cancer and pesticide, finding that childhood exposure to the chemicals increases chances for leukemia by 47 percent and the chance of developing lymphoma by 43 percent.
Researchers caution that while the link was seen in data, pesticides may be helping to influence the development of other cancers and not necessarily only leukemia or lymphoma.
"We are starting to get to the place where there is enough science, it just starts to add up to say that we can't really ignore anymore," Dr. Catherine J. Karr, a professor of pediatrics and director of the Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit at the University of Washington, told CNN. "This study is a nice contribution because it focuses in on what is the effect of home use of pesticides versus (other) exposures."

Global Warming to Pick Up in 2015, 2016: Experts

Man-made global warming is set to produce exceptionally high average temperatures this year and next, boosted by natural weather phenomena such as El Nino, Britain's top climate and weather body said in a report Monday.
"It looks very likely that globally 2014, 2015 and 2016 will all be amongst the very warmest years ever recorded," said Rowan Sutton of the National Centre for Atmospheric Science, which contributed to the report.
A couple takes the trip of a lifetime, hiking across dangerous Alaskan glaciers in order to visit a captivating ice cave that no longer exists.

"This is not a fluke," he said. "We are seeing the effects of energy steadily accumulating in the Earth's oceans and atmosphere, caused by greenhouse gas emissions."

The rate at which global temperatures are increasing is also on track to pick up in the coming years, ending a period of more than a decade in which the pace of warming worldwide had appeared to slow down, the report said.
This "pause" has been seized upon by sceptics as evidence that climate change was driven more by natural cycles than human activity.
Some scientists, however, argue that there was no significant slowdown, pointing instead to flawed calculations.
The 20-page report from Britain's Met Office -- titled "Big changes underway in the climate system?" -- highlights current transitions in major weather patterns that affect rainfall and temperatures at a regional level.

An El Nino weather pattern centred in the tropical Pacific Ocean is "well underway," the report says, and shaping up to be one of the most intense on record. Very strong El Ninos also occurred over the winters of 1997 and 1982.
Set to grow stronger in the coming months, the current El Nino -- a result of shifting winds and ocean circulation -- is likely to result is dry conditions in parts of Asia and Australia, as well as southern and sub-Saharan North Africa, the Met Office said.
By contrast, the southwestern United States -- including parched California, suffering from an historic drought -- has a strong chance of seeing higher-than-average rainfall.
El Ninos also affect tropical storms, making them less likely in the North Atlantic and more intense in the West Pacific, where they are known as typhoons.

What Warming Means For 4 Of Summer’s Worst Pests

Overall, an El Nino is also likely to add a little heat to the general impact of global warming.
Meanwhile, warming sea surface temperatures along the North American west coast point to a reversal of another natural pattern called the Pacific Decadal Oscillation.
This, too, could temporarily nudge regional temperatures higher, but has yet to be confirmed, the report said.
Finally, the interplay of ocean currents and atmosphere in the Atlantic -- another multi-decade oscillation -- is moving the other way, and will have a cooling effect.
"The current warm phase is now 20 years long and historical precedent suggests a return to relatively cool conditions could occur within a few years," the report says.

Greenland Melting Prompts NASA Fears Of Coastal Flooding

By itself, that would mean cooler and drying summers in northern Europe, and increased rainfall in the northeastern United States.
While all of these cyclical forces affect weather and temperatures trends, global warming is the main driver of change today, the report concluded.
"We know that natural patterns contribute to global temperature in any given year, but very warm temperatures so far this year indicate the continued impact of increasing greenhouse gases," said Stephen Belcher, director of the Met Office Hadley Centre.

GOP Presidential Candidates Are Well To The Right Of Their Hero, Ronald Reagan

Later this week, the GOP presidential candidates will stride on to the debate stage at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California and all proclaim undying fealty to the former president and conservative demi-god, while each claiming that only he is the true keeper of the Reagan legacy.
But how does Ronald Reagan himself compare to those who hope to occupy the White House in the shadow of his greatness?
Today the Center for American Progress Action Fund will release a new reportthat makes a detailed case that the GOP presidential candidates are all well to the right of Reagan, and actually represent a break from core aspects of his approach to the presidency. The report may be one of the most comprehensive efforts yet to spell out this argument in an issue-by-issue fashion. Among the report’s assertions:
1) Ronald Reagan repeatedly raised taxes, including on the rich, and closed loopholes that benefited the wealthy. While it’s true that Reagan’s tax cuts were a lot larger than his tax hikes, the fact that he did repeatedly raise them does contrast with what we know of the plans from today’s GOP candidates, some of whom have already signed Grover Norquist’s anti-tax pledge. And while it’s true that the tax plans offered by Bush and Marco Rubio include some middle class tax relief, they also give the wealthy a big tax cut, and it’s hard to imagine any of the GOP candidates calling for any tax hikes, even on the highest earners (with the astonishing exception of Donald Trump).
2) Reagan signed immigration reform that included a path to legalization for nearly three million undocumented immigrants. The report digs up a quote in which Reagan appeared to express support for “amnesty for those who have put down roots and who have lived here even though some time back they may have entered illegally.” By contrast, of today’s GOP candidates, only Jeb Bush appears to be genuinely open to a path to legal status that would not require some sort of undefined state of absolute border security to be attained first.
3) The report argues that Reagan actually grew government, noting that spending went up on his watch — including deficit spending. (The report also argues that contrary to common wisdom, non-defense spending also went up substantially.) It also notes that many of the GOP presidential candidates have come out for a balanced budget amendment, which would probably require deep and destructive cuts to government.
4) Ronald Reagan advocated for the Brady law, which established a federal gun background check system. It’s hard to imagine today’s GOP presidential candidates backing the creation of a reform such as Brady; indeed, virtually all Republicans in the Senate opposed the bill to close the background check system’s loopholes. Jeb Bush has said he doesn’t envision any federal role in gun laws (though his campaign subsequently clarified that he doesn’t support any new federal laws). It might be worth asking the candidates whether they support repealing the current background check system that Reagan advocated for.
The report concludes:
Reagan was able to mix pragmatism with conservatism. And at critical moments on critical issues, Reagan took positions that are anathema to the leaders of today’s Republican Party — advancing sensible immigration reform, supporting pollution control, curbing nuclear arms, closing tax loopholes for the wealthy, and advocating gun background checks….a closer look at President Reagan’s record and the positions of the current crop of GOP candidates reveals…how far to the right of Reaganthey and the Republican party have moved.
The Hillary Clinton campaign has been relying on the Center for American Progress’ blueprints as a guide to its own proposals and pronouncements, so it wouldn’t be surprising if we hear the above argument about Republicans and Reagan a lot more in coming days.
