The Borowitz Report: "Trump Offers Stimulus Checks To Anyone Willing To Come To His Next Rally"
"Trump Offers Stimulus Checks To Anyone Willing To Come To His Next Rally"
WASHINGTON, D.C. (The Borowitz Report)—Hoping to avert another debacle like the one at his rally in Tulsa, Donald J. Trump said on Tuesday that he was offering economic-stimulus checks to anyone willing to come to his next rally, in Arizona.
Displaying a sample check in the Oval Office, Trump said that he hoped eventually to put millions of unemployed Americans back to work as full-time audience members at his rallies.
“The dishonest media are saying that people wouldn’t go to one of my rallies if I paid them,” Trump said. “Well, we’ll see about that.”
Larry Kudlow, Trump’s economic adviser, said that the twelve-hundred-dollar stimulus checks would be paid “in installments, based on how long the recipients actually stay at the rally.”
“If you walk out after the first hour, you only get six hundred,” he said. “You’re really going to have to earn the full twelve hundred.”

A Great "Read" About This Unexpected Moment... And How The Outcome Can Go Either Way

Quora Discussion Pursuant To The Question: "Why Is Socialism So Popular?"
Freaking Out Over "Socialized Democracy" ("Democratic Socialism") Is Like Being Afraid Of Oz
Capitalism is by far the most efficient system for maximizing the productive output of a society, but in its pure form, it only passes down the bare minimum amount of revenue required to get a low skilled worker to show up. If it’s enough to survive, then it is enough to motivate labor. That increases when the labor supply is in shortage, but in times like the late 19th and early 20th century, it’s easy to see that this was not always the case, which brought terrible consequences to the working class throughout the industrialized world.
Now this system fueled some serious unrest in societies where it was practiced, which is why it was eventually tempered with implementations of some socialist programs, creating what we call mixed market economies. These include:
- Public schooling
- National Parks
- Nationalized Healthcare (Medicare and Medicaid)
- Public Police forces
- Public Firefighters
- Social Security
The USA is one such mixed market economy, as are all the countries of Europe. Some have programs with a larger scope than others.
What is happening when socialism is becoming popular is not a revival of the Bolsheviks.
What is happening is that people want to increase the number or scale of some of the socialist programs, so that the balance between productive output and personal economic security leans more toward the latter.
So far, the “big scary communist proposals” that have everyone pissing themselves doesn’t even add anything to that list. It simply expands on two currently existing programs. Increasing public schooling from 12 to 16 years, and increasing the age and income range where people can get access to Medicare.
Given the economic instability since 2007, this was a very predictable political outcome.

The First Commandment's Counsel On Statues Depicting Slave Owners And Confederates
Alan: Not one professed Christian in a thousand knows The First Commandment in its entirety.
And those who have read all the words have Absolutely No Intention of doing what it says.
I have been down this road before...
But I will mention again that the Jewish interpretation of the First Commandment (an interpretation which strikes me as the only possible interpretation) proscribes any representational art that uses creatures as its subject. NOTHING was to come between humans and the contemplation of God's creation.
Such rigid proscription is not a "course of action" I would choose.
But, if people agreed (as Jews and Islamics agree), proscription would be a completely workable solution - as well as a solution that finally obeys The First Commandment.
Ironically, the supposed purpose of statues is to "keep history alive."
Yet "the Jews" - without statuary or any other representational art -- are a singularly historical people.
A convincing argument is made that the historical books of the Old Testament actually merged history with divinity - perhaps a prelude to The Incarnation whereby, mythically at least, the transcendant God was made into the very Flesh of sensory reality.
It can even be argued that Jews invented history, at least as a discipline/pastime revered by "commoners."
Although there are two versions of the decalogue/Ten Commandments in the Old Testament, here is the First Commandment (THE FIRST!!!) as set forth in Exodus: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_am_the_Lord_thy_God
A pertinent aside...
I have written at length about strict application of The First Commandment to escape the looming socio-political and semantic ravages of "Deep Fake" technology.

Yankees Get The Job Done. "Johnny Reb" Can Be Counted On To Bollux Damn Near Everything
This is a national moment when we need a Winston Churchill to lead us in the fight with the coronavirus. Instead, President Trump reassures us that “it’s going away” — his words as he spoke in Arizona at a packed megachurch where few people wore masks. Instead of Churchill, we have a leader who tries to deceive us, not the enemy, and then helps that enemy infiltrate our homes and churches. |
As this map by my graphics colleague Nathaniel Lash suggests, some 27 states are reporting increasing numbers of cases, while just 10 and Washington D.C. are reporting falling numbers (the rest are holding steady). Arizona has the highest number of new cases per day per million population, and Texas, California, Arizona and several other states have reported record numbers of cases in the last few days. |
That’s my column today. Brace yourself. |
The Economic Disaster Ahead |
Whenever I talk to epidemiologists, I’m struck by the gulf between public opinion and expert opinion. Most people and the financial markets seem to think that we’re going through a tough period but that it will be over soon. Epidemiologists on the other hand, think that for at least the next year we’ll be fighting the virus, losing friends and family, and suffering from a depressed economy. |
Likewise, the I.M.F. says it expects the global economy to shrink 4.9 percent this year and to recover more slowly than many expect. And remember that disasters sometimes feed on each other. The economic crises could increase the risk of upheaval in Saudi Arabia or Iran that would interrupt oil supplies, or could increase the chance of Chinese adventurism in the South China Sea or the Taiwan Strait. In other words, I fear that this will be a longer and more painful road than many expect. |
