"A Brave And Startling Truth": "When The Curtain Falls On The Minstrel Show Of Hate..."

Earth - The Blue Marble

A BRAVE AND STARTLING TRUTH
Maya Angelou
We, this people, on a small and lonely planet
Traveling through casual space
Past aloof stars, across the way of indifferent suns
To a destination where all signs tell us
It is possible and imperative that we learn
A brave and startling truth
And when we come to it
To the day of peacemaking
When we release our fingers
From fists of hostility
And allow the pure air to cool our palms
When we come to it
When the curtain falls on the minstrel show of hate
And faces sooted with scorn are scrubbed clean
When battlefields and coliseum
No longer rake our unique and particular sons and daughters
Up with the bruised and bloody grass
To lie in identical plots in foreign soil
When the rapacious storming of the churches
The screaming racket in the temples have ceased
When the pennants are waving gaily
When the banners of the world tremble
Stoutly in the good, clean breeze
When we come to it
When we let the rifles fall from our shoulders
And children dress their dolls in flags of truce
When land mines of death have been removed
And the aged can walk into evenings of peace
When religious ritual is not perfumed
By the incense of burning flesh
And childhood dreams are not kicked awake
By nightmares of abuse
When we come to it
Then we will confess that not the Pyramids
With their stones set in mysterious perfection
Nor the Gardens of Babylon
Hanging as eternal beauty
In our collective memory
Not the Grand Canyon
Kindled into delicious color
By Western sunsets
Nor the Danube, flowing its blue soul into Europe
Not the sacred peak of Mount Fuji
Stretching to the Rising Sun
Neither Father Amazon nor Mother Mississippi who, without favor,
Nurture all creatures in the depths and on the shores
These are not the only wonders of the world
When we come to it
We, this people, on this minuscule and kithless globe
Who reach daily for the bomb, the blade and the dagger
Yet who petition in the dark for tokens of peace
We, this people on this mote of matter
In whose mouths abide cankerous words
Which challenge our very existence
Yet out of those same mouths
Come songs of such exquisite sweetness
That the heart falters in its labor
And the body is quieted into awe
We, this people, on this small and drifting planet
Whose hands can strike with such abandon
That in a twinkling, life is sapped from the living
Yet those same hands can touch with such healing, irresistible tenderness
That the haughty neck is happy to bow
And the proud back is glad to bend
Out of such chaos, of such contradiction
We learn that we are neither devils nor divines
When we come to it
We, this people, on this wayward, floating body
Created on this earth, of this earth
Have the power to fashion for this earth
A climate where every man and every woman
Can live freely without sanctimonious piety
Without crippling fear
When we come to it
We must confess that we are the possible
We are the miraculous, the true wonder of this world
That is when, and only when
We come to it.
The second annual Universe in Verse — a charitable celebration of science through poetry, and a voice of resistance against the assault on nature — opened with the poem “A Brave and Startling Truth” by Maya Angelou (April 4, 1928–May 28, 2014), which flew to space on the Orion spacecraft and which Angelou dedicated to “the hope for peace, which lies, sometimes hidden, in every heart.” I chose this poem to set the tone for the show in part because it is absolutely stunning and acutely relevant to our cultural moment, and in part because the first time I read it, it sparked in me a sudden insight into the often invisible ways in which science and poetry influence and inspire one another — into how the golden threads of thought and feeling stretch and cross-hatch across disciplines to weave what we call culture.
Angelou composed the poem for the 50th anniversary of the United Nations in 1995. In 1994, Carl Sagan delivered a beautiful speech at Cornell University, inspired by the Voyager’s landmark photograph of Earth seen for the very first time from the outer reaches of the Solar System — a now-iconic image the spacecraft took on Sagan’s spontaneous insistence before shutting off the cameras upon completion of the planned mission to photograph the outer planets.

In describing what the Voyager captured in that grainy photograph of mostly empty space, Sagan limned Earth as a “pale blue dot.” That became the moniker of the photograph itself and the title of his bestselling book published later that year, in which he wrote that “everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives” on this “mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.”
This poetic phrase imprinted itself on the popular imagination and permeated culture in the months following the book’s publication — the months during which Angelou was composing her poem. Like all great poets, she was extremely precise and deliberate about her word choice. Mote is a rather peculiar word, particularly in this cosmic context, and I can’t help but think that by using the phrase “mote of matter” in the final stanzas, Angelou was paying tribute to Sagan and to the message of the Voyager — a message about our place in the cosmic order not as something separate from and superior to nature, but as a tiny pixel-part of it, imbued with equal parts humility and responsibility.
Reading the poem at The Universe in Verse is astrophysicist Janna Levin — a recent performer of some beautiful poetry and a member, alongside Sagan, of the tiny peer group of working scientists who write about science with uncommon poetic might. Please enjoy:

Excerpt from Rev. Rob Hardies' Sermon in Response to Trump Win ...

All Souls Church Unitarian
Dear Ones,

It is with a swirl of emotions that I send this email, sharing my final sermon as your senior minister (available on our homepage and Facebook page).

The All Souls worship team and I returned to our sanctuary and pulpit on Wednesday to tape this last service together. We put a lot of heart and love into it. I hope you feel that love, too.

This week we have gathered twice as a congregation for public rallies and vigils in remembrance of George Floyd, and all those who've lost their lives to white supremacist violence. I want to say a big "Thank You!" to everyone who came out on Tuesday and Friday evenings as we tolled our bell for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, in remembrance of George Floyd's brutal killing.

After being physically apart from one another for several months, it was powerful to again experience the strength, love, and solidarity that are present when we are together. For me, it was another reminder of how much I love you and will miss you.

Tomorrow is my last day as your minister. We will say a final goodbye as minister and congregation with a Ritual of Gratitude and Love at 7:00 pm on Monday June 8 on Zoom. Everybody's welcome, and I hope you'll join us. [I hope that before this service you'll have a chance to watch my sermons from May 31 and June 7, which are also an integral part of our goodbye. But if you can't, don't worry!]

You will find the login information for the Ritual of Gratitude and Love tomorrow on our homepage.

Friends, it's not easy to be present to both the brokenness of our world right now, and to our goodbyes. These aren't the conditions under which we wanted or expected to say goodbye to one another. But this is the world we find ourselves confronting, and I know we're up to it. We can both lift our prophetic witness and say our loving goodbyes.

And just in case you don't have another opportunity to hear me say it: "I love you all. I miss you. And I will always be proud to call myself a living member of the great family of All Souls."

Love,

This happened yesterday in Long Beach: The policeman is pointing a gun that shoots rubber bullets directly at the face of a man while that man's 2 year old son sits on his shoulders. That father was peacefully protesting with his child. Exercising his first amendment rights as an American. A minute earlier those same cops threatened to shoot the 2 year old with tear gas.

Alan: Two things.

It is no secret that the United States values property over human life.

By a long shot!

This "principle" of "property over life" is embedded in American jurisprudence.

It is also no secret that Uncle Sam's All-American reflex is to assume that violence -- particularly gun violence -- is the go-to solution for social problems.

An important subset of this observation is that America's "militia men" (militia women?) are itching for a fight.

If that fight takes the form of civil war, many - and probably most - militiamen would be delighted.

America is at a crossroads.

One major issue in play is the use of armed force by designated authorities - and the population at large.

If Trump (directly or indirectly) "authorizes" the "authorities" to start "shooting" people, God save us.

Americans do not look fondly on their own government shooting fellow citizens in the streets.

Furthermore, the Americans most immediately involved in the Minneapolis turmoil are people whose emotions have been understandably triggered by an apparent murderer pretending to be an authority.

Killing more people while trying to "re-impose order" that was destroyed by a bad cop (of whom there are far too many) is, literally, playing with fire.

And Trump will play with that fire without having the moral high ground.

The fact that Trump has never occupied the moral high ground is another inflammatory element in a socio-political environment where pussy-grabbing macho man is predisposed to do not only the wrong thing, but the worst thing.

And remember... there are no longer any adults in the room.

And an undeclared civil war -- fobbed off as "totally unacceptable" mob violence -- is EXACTLY the climactic event Trump's Base has been drooling over.

LGBTQ bar owner who was lending support to George Floyd protesters ...
"LGBTQ Bar Owner Who Was Lending Support To George Floyd Protesters Speaks Out About Being Fired At By Raleigh Police"
Yahoo News

Dear Mayor Baldwin,

Police opened fire on a Raleigh LGBTQ bar because the owner was handing out water to protestors. His business was vandalized with a white supremacist symbol, and the bar’s glass doors and windows were broken. Police shouted, "The game is over!" before they opened fire without warning.

I am a resident of Raleigh, and I urge you and the rest of the City Council to amend or deny the proposed budget for 2021. I would like to redirect money away from RPD and into social service programs that will benefit public health and our own communities, especially communities of color. The proposed budget for 2021 suggests that the largest fraction of the city’s budget should go to policing ($110,650,573), which is over 60% larger than even the second largest allocation of funds, fire ($67,687,901). If this is truly representative of the council’s thoughts on how funds should be allocated in a city in which over 6,000 of my neighbors (Raleigh + Wake County) are currently experiencing homelessness and in which nearly 100,000 of my neighbors (Raleigh + Wake County) are impoverished and at risk of becoming homeless ( www.raleighrescue.org ), I am ashamed of the Raleigh City Council priorities reflected in this budget.

Crime is not random. Crime (except police brutality) usually happens when someone has been unable to meet their basic needs through other means. So, to really “fight crime,” we don’t need more police officers - we need more jobs, more educational opportunities, more arts programs, more community centers, more mental health resources, as well as more of a say in how our own communities function. This is a long transition process but change starts with reallocating this funding!

We don’t need a militarized police force. We need to create a space in which more mental health service providers, social workers, victim/survivor advocates, religious leaders, neighbors, and friends - all of the people who really make up our community - can look out for one another. Mayor Baldwin, will you look out for us all, equally?

Sincerely,

Putin Rejects Trump’s Request for Ten Thousand Russian Troops to Guard White House

MOSCOW (The Borowitz Report)—Vladimir Putin has rejected Donald J. Trump’s request for ten thousand active-duty Russian Army troops to guard the perimeter around the White House, Administration and Kremlin sources have confirmed.

After Trump’s call for U.S. troops was rebuffed by Defense Secretary Mark Esper and General Mark Milley, Trump reportedly snapped, “I’ll call Vlad,” and stormed out of the meeting with the two men.

Much to Trump’s disappointment, however, his request for Russian troops met with a chilly response.

“The optics would be terrible,” Putin reportedly told him. “Worse than that crazy thing you did with the Bible. Really, you need to get a grip.”

According to White House sources, Trump has subsequently phoned the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, but his calls have gone straight to voice mail.
