Excerpt: With a concerned eye to how our metaphors shape our thinking, Le Guin adds:

We can’t restructure our society without restructuring the English language. One reflects the other. A lot of people are getting tired of the huge pool of metaphors that have to do with war and conflict [and] the proliferation of battle metaphors, such as being a warrior, righting, defeating, and so on. In response, I could say that once you become conscious of these battle metaphors, you can start “fighting” against them. That’s one option. Another is to realize that conflict is not the only human response to a situation and to begin to find other metaphors, such as resisting, outwitting, skipping, or subverting. This kind of consciousness can open the door to all sorts of new behavior.

Alan: When I was a kid in the '50s, the overwhelming mythic metaphor of popular American life was "Cowboys and Indians." (The largely un-noted decline of the "Cowboy and Indian" myth system leaves a startling void in American intellectual culture.)

By the early '60s, "Cowboys and Indians" were giving way to the metaphor of "salvific police" (Dragnet, Colombo, Kojak), a metaphor which has since morphed (and diluted) into many fragmented mythic tendencies, all of them ultimately dependent on the unconscious normalization of capitalist consumerism (or, seen from the flip side, the correlative collapse of responsible citizenship) and the never-ending acquisition of purchaseable pleasures.

Notably, no mythic space is given to the homeless, marginalized, disenfranchised and impoverished even though their ranks are rapidly increasing. (Richard Gere plays a homeless person in the movie "Time Out Of Mind," and although there is no sexual degradation, shocking violence or jolting glimpses of "horror," it is a very difficult movie to watch, precisely because we "don't want to see it." Keep it on the margins. Keep it out of sight. Sweep it under "the mythic rug.")

The last time "the homeless, marginalized, forgotten and impoverished" had a mythic hero to champion their cause was in the person of Yeshua the Nazarene. 

But even his residual influence on culture (despite last-gasp championship by "Christian""conservatives") has been pre-empted by "The Gospel of Wealth" and, more generally, the normalization of consumerism whose core belief (opaque to American "consumer units" cosseted in their electronic pleasure domes and fixated on a man who embodies every Deadly Sins, particularly greed) is that "s/he who dies with the most toys wins."

It's a bloody good thing "the left" does not spend its collective energy trying to prove conspiracy theories.

Otherwise, the epistemological swamp would be "black-hole inescapable."

In the end, people will believe what they want to believe except for the vanishingly few who are imbued with that rare scientific trait of "trying to prove themselves wrong." 

Often, but not always, intellectually indolent proto-fascists understand that their lives are structured in such a way that they MUST defend/protect/prolong the belief systems in which they are too heavily invested. 

In consequence, withdrawing themselves from these "backed-into-a-corner" belief systems will cause "the already-saved" to "lose their religion," thereby prompting crazy-making identity crises. 

In the popular imagination, there is NOTHING that promises as much pain as "losing your religion." It is a fate worse than death.

Note well.

If "the left" put its mind to it, we could "flesh out" the "Carolyn Gombel story" even better than seasoned conspiracists on the reactionary, absolutist right.

  

Here is the inescapable problem they present.

If these "true believers" had not become so politically meddlesome as to threaten the existence of liberal, open societies grounded in The European Enlightenment -- societies that are largely propelled by The Scientific Method operating cheek-by-jowl with belief in personal autonomy expressing itself collectively in democratic governance -- I would be happy to let "true believers" believe whatever they want. 

In fact, like Spanish philosopher-novelist Miguel de Unamuno, I think it would be best if "true believers" could go through their entire lives in the relative "bliss" of ignorance, inextricably imbued with fantasy faithfulness - even when the tenets of their faith contradict scientifically demonstrable fact.

Let them have whatever anxiolytic pain-killers they need.

However, I draw the line at the idiotic, politically-aggressive assertion that "my opinion trumps your truth."

Michael's book -- a reworking of his doctoral thesis at the London School of Economics -- has been a collaborative effort with editors at University of Chicago Press, who confected the book's name with an eye to attracting "lay" readers.

Without losing its scholarly depth and mastery, "Hope and Scorn" has been "re-worked" to appeal not only to scholars but to thoughtful people in all walks of life.

Michael is such an amiable fellow - thoughtful, kind, gentle, cheerful, undaunted -- as well as being a brilliant extemporaneous speaker and "on-the-fly" thinker (with a great memory and the agility to synthesize fresh thoughts by ranging over a host of disciplines), I think Michael is in an excellent position -- if the vicissitudes of fortune break his way... and a few stars align -- to be given a place on the "talk show circuit."

Of course, one never knows if a "break" will be in the offing.

It is also possible that Michael's genius could be implicitly threatening to talk-show "screeners," although I think his extraordinary amiability will be prophylactic in this regard.

What is certain is that we will all be much better informed, alert - even enlightened - firstly by "Hope and Scorn," but also if Michael becomes a "go-to professorial resource" in "the national discussion."

NPR would wisely snatch him up.

No single conspiracy theory is subscribed to by more than 25% of the population. The "Big" conspiracies like birtherism; "devious federal reserve control of the world economy," and 9/11 being an inside job, are all minoritarian belief systems.

It's true that half of Americans believe in a "deep state."

But the deep state isn't really a conspiracy.

The deep state is what happens when knowledgeable, capable bureaucrats are in control of the government's day-to -day operation, unlike "The Shallow State" overseen by dimwit Dimwit Donald and his addlepated appointees who pretend to operate government and, in their chaotic disarray, embarrass themselves daily.

Therefore, it is not reasonable to say that octo arms "generally" depict the federal reserve or globalism since "generally" means that at least half the population subscribes to a given belief, policy, position or phenomenon.

Rather than just accept the echoing lunacy of the bubble you're in, actually conduct your own research.

Wrong again. Look at the political comics and art and memes of the past 10 years. It usually depicts globalism or central banks.

The deep state is made up of individuals not elected that aren't accountable to US citizens who make life and death decisions. According to the 9th and 10th amendment they are illegal.

I find it hilarious that a leftist is telling me to check my sources. I always check my sources and I expose myself to all media outlets, even CNN. I find that very few are honest and of those few they mostly put a left leaning spin on those things. There are very few conservative news sources at all (Tucker Carlson, Alex Jones, etc...etc...) I find that they generally tell the truth when reporting news (not their opinion pieces).

I don't have confirmation bias because I check the sources of information and find where the information originated and examine the original source. I find that 90% of the time its being misreported.

You name calling insulting link at the bottom is a joke. Conservatives are generally nice polite and willing to listen. I find that leftists are ignorant of facts, hate without cause, and do cruel things in every interaction. They tend to lie and deceive at every opportunity, sometimes when it won't advance their aims.

The fundamental meaning of a metaphorical octopus is that someone or some organization has lots of tentacles reaching into lots of places.

In your spare time, you can run the revelatory experiment I outlined. During the normal course of your life, ask strangers you meet how they interpret the tentacles of an octopus when they see them in a cartoon.

I don't deny there's a small minority of people who interpret octopods as the federal reserve, but it's not 25% and you can PROVE this to yourself by conducting your own informal survey. It's not hard. You just don't want to prove yourself wrong.

9/11 conspiracists are "all over the map." But no SINGLE theory has a 25% following.

If you break the theories down into those who think Saddam Hussein was responsible, or that Massad was responsible; or that Rudy Giuliani was responsible; or that the owner of the Twin Towers was responsible, or this, or that, or the other... there is no one theory to which 25% of Americans subscribe. Sure, if you invite agreement with questions like "Do you believe Saddam Hussein was responsible" you get a bunch of affirmative answers. But if you ask "Do you hold a conspiratorial theory about 9/11? And if so, what is it?" you will discover that not even 25% of Americans subscribe to a SINGLE fixed conspiracy theory.

Notice that Bill Barr is not building a case around the 9th and 10th amendments to expunge the Deep State. Why? Because without these functionaries, government would collapse, and along
with it ALL semblance of constitutional law and order.

Already you and I both know you're not going to send me such a link because you know you can't locate one, at least one that isn't laughable.

I'm not saying he's correct all the time. I'm saying he's the most reliably correct and when he is wrong he issues a retraction.

Compare "Meals on Wheels" and "diarrhea on the golf course" to the real menace represented by COVID-19 whose mismanagement will be the fundamental cause of Trump's November defeat.

Consider Devious Donald's frighteningly autocratic policies at the Department of Justice: releasing Mike Flynn although he himself chose to plead guilty on a serious felony charge.

Consider Trump's insistence on "non-disclosure" and hiding financial records when he said of Hillary Clinton's associates - and I quote - "If you're innocent, why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?"

Surely you see that Trump is hiding something. And since no major American bank has dealt with Trump since the mid-90s, he had to borrow money from German banks, and I'll bet you a thousand dollars "even money" that his financial records lead to incriminating evidence about illegal banking procedures with Russian oligarchs.

Spare me the bullshit.

Trump already force-feeds me more than I can swallow.
