Rev. Martin Niemöller

Gracias por escucharme compas.

Saludos calurosos a todos - a tu mami, a Guillermo, a tu hermano, a Yaya, Rebeca, Debora y Angelita. Y a los albaniles.

Paz con ustedes,

Alan

"The Danger Of Carbon Dioxide As A Greenhouse Gas Was First Described In 1896"
Alan Archibald

“The concept of global warming was invented by the Chinese to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.” Verbatim quote by Donald Trump

  • FM: Magnetic poles are shifting rapidly. Nobody mentions it because left vs right is more fun for everyone in charge.
    • Alan Archibald Here is how I look at global warming.

If you knew that you could have one - and only one - car to last you the rest of your life, and the engine of that car started to overheat, would you take measures — using “best available knowledge” — to do whatever you could to remedy the source of overheating so that the engine would not permanently seize?

There are any number of other variables that can be brought into any discussion, and for years I have watched with interest the gyrations of earth's magnetic poles.

But when secondary and tertiary variables (at least in-so-far as we can reasonably evaluate those variables now) become distractions from the urgency of keeping the engine from freezing, I have no interest in prioritizing distractions. (Honorable mention maybe but NO prioritization.)

Not many years ago, the Chinese government was advancing a plan to build a massive damn that would flood extensive urban areas, necessitating the removal and relocation of more than 1 million people.

To advance its propaganda campaign, the Chinese government (reminiscent of Trumpista logic) argued that the region-soon-to-be-flooded had been underwater during The Ordovician and therefore the government was only restoring the site’s ecological integrity.

It is important to have an open mind, but not so open our brains fall out.

I want to be clear than I am not attached to left wing positions except insofar as I see them being more coincident with truth than the alternatives.

By my lights, Stephen Colbert was spot-on when he referred to Truth's "well-known left-wing bias."

Similarly, I resonate with Rev. William Sloan Coffin's observation that "the heart leans to the left."

However, when I do not see left-wing positions being more coincident with truth, I say so.

Just yesterday, I sang Donald Trump‘s praises in no uncertain terms: https://paxonbothhouses.blogspot.com/.../i-applaud-donald...

Under Trump, we have become a rogue nation.
About this website
BROOKINGS.EDU
Trump is not merely neglecting the liberal world order; he is milking it for narrow gain, rapidly destroying the trust and sense of common purpose that have held it together and prevented international chaos for seven decades.
Comments

  • FM: I remember being an asshole and minimizing our murder of Ghaddafi and his family because the shitbags of MSNBClA told me to. You really think America not caring about the rest of the world is a new concept because of Orangeman? GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK. Think deeper. We're better than this, and we're better than what we were before Orangeman. We were a rogue nation even before the COUP that occurred in 1963. We had the leader we needed, but he didn't have the infrastructure below.

YOU are better than these thoughts, I know it. And I don't think the words "liberal" and "world order" belong in the same sentence.
    • Alan Archibald I am always suspicious when Uncle Sam thumps his war drum.

Indeed, I have been suspicious of American motives ever since the white man's brutal seizure of the New World.

I am particularly suspicious of anything smacking of "crusade" which is how George W. Bush first characterized the need for retaliation against "the Muslim world" - although his choice of Iraq as America's "designated enemy" rather than "Saudi Arabia" speaks volumes... simultaneously obviating need for additional commentary.

      As for MSNBC...

I have not had television for 24 years and consequently am not thrall to any of the "talking heads" whose very worst representatives Trump mainlines like the stupefacted, plutocratic junkie he is.

      As for "rogue nation..."

We have been a rogue nation since inception and -- as a University of Toronto graduate and long-time resident of Canada -- I have argued for 20 years that the United States polluted the wellspring of its own foundation by waging a needless, bloody war on the Brits.

If our already-wealthy Founding Fathers had not been bitten by unbridled avariciousness, we could have evolved into a peaceful polity as Canada did.

Instead, we use the bogus battle cry "no new taxes" just as our political forebears griped about "taxation without representation" - surely an issue, but rather trivial as a casus belli.

Anyhow, not-so-instant-karma has finally caught up with us and we are now being knocked in the head for our foundational stupidity.

The only unique quality pertaining to Trump's election and his ignorant, ill-informed, churlish administration is that America's underbelly -- long obscured by the bogus "Official Story" -- is now in full view and the world is taking note of plutocracy's "deep state" motives which is to make the rich richer, the poor poorer and to ensure that those in the middle blame their "inferiors" rather than their superiors whom they weirdly worship.

The shrinking of Europe’s traditional political parties continues.
In Britain, the two main parties, Labour and the Conservatives, finished in third place and fifth place in this weekend’s European Parliament elections. The populist right-wing Brexit Party finished first, with close to 32 percent of votes.
In Germany, the two establishment parties — one center-right and one center-left — lost more than quarter of their combined seats. The biggest gainers were the left-leaning Greens.
In France, the Greens gained as well, although the right-wing National Rally (known until recently as the National Front) finished first. The two traditional parties finished fourth and sixth.
Many people felt relief that far-right parties — which traffic in xenophobia — didn’t do better in this weekend’s elections. Instead, candidates who support the idea of the European Union combined to win a majority of seats. I share that relief.
But I think it’s important not to lose sight of the main story line. Across much of Europe and the United States, dissatisfaction with the status quo remains the dominant political mood. That’s why so many European parties that were powerful only a few years ago now finish well outside the top two spots. It’s also why Donald Trump was able to take over the Republican Party and win the presidency — and why control of Congress has flipped back and forth in recent years.
In the 2020 presidential campaign, Trump will no doubt attempt to tap into this anti-establishment mood once again. He will be the incumbent, which will make that strategy trickier for him. But he will be an incumbent like no other, one who constantly shows his disdain for the status quo.
Democrats will need their own plan for speaking to this desire for change, especially if they nominate the decidedly establishment Joe Biden.
For more …
Extremist right-wing parties did especially well in countries where they’ve become more politically established, including France, Italy, Britain and Poland, notes Johns Hopkins political scientist Yascha Mounk. “Far-right populists are now established as a major force in virtually all European countries,” he tweeted.
My colleague Ross Douthat thinks those gains are proof that “the global fade of liberalism” may be a longer-lasting phenomenon than many liberals believe. “A liberalism that remains inflexible in the face of variegated resistance is the ideology more likely to be crushed,” he writes.
The Washington Post’s Anne Applebaum sees a re-emergence of political debate in Europe, as the center collapses and the right and left grow. “The European Parliament will now be a place where real politics happen. There will be deals to do, arguments to have,” she writes. “Despite itself, the continent is becoming a single political space.”
In The Atlantic, Yasmeen Serhan articulates the flip side: “The results foreshadow a European future increasingly influenced by diametrically opposing forces, and the divisions that come with them,” she writes.
In The Times, Jochen Bittner, a German political writer, calls for the abolition of the European Parliament. It should be replaced, he writes, with a body more closely tied to domestic politics in each European country — and thus more accountable to voters.

"Beating Hearts," The "Seamless Ethic Of Life" And "Pro-Lifers" Re-Defined As "Pro-Birthers"

Alan: Declaring oneself "pro-life" is among the easiest "feel-good" gestures in American politics.

Here's the hidden underbelly.

When "pro-lifers" do not "put their money where their mouth is" once the child is out of the womb and Mom needs help, their mouth is, for the most part, just another Big Mouth.

And typically, an overwhelming percentage of "conservative""Christians" make the easy migration from "righteousness" to "self-righteousness," certain they are "The Chosen" and "the rest of us" are "Baby Killers."
Sister Joan Chittester refers to people who are exclusively focused on uterine life as "pro-birth," not "pro-life" - a distinction we "should" make.
