How nice is Barack Obama when there’s no camera around?

Jason Wells
Jason Wells, Fiction and Non-Fiction Writer
During my tenure with the U.S. Secret Service, I was part of (then) Senator Barack Obama's protection detail from March 2007 until November 2008, on his election night.  I was chosen as part of a "round robin" detail where agents were selected at random from their field offices to spend time with a candidate on the campaign trail to keep him safe.  This protection detail is known as C.N.O.S. (Campaign Nominee Operation Section) and is basically the rotation that the U.S. Secret Service goes through during the Election season.  Sen. Obama was given protection unusually early due to the volume of threats that he was receiving.  The rotation consisted of being out on the road with him 24/7 for three week intervals, home for six weeks, and then back out again.  It was like this for 18 months.
I made it a point to remain unbiased in my political opinions when asked about Mr. Obama while on this assignment.  I also tend to judge others by how they treat me rather than how they expect to be treated.  I will say that, personally, I have differed on many of President Obama's stances in politics.  I do not support much of his political agenda.
With that stated.... Senator Obama, Mrs. Obama and their two daughters were always extremely cordial and appreciative for everything that we provided them.  They were engaging with us, asking us about our families and making sure that we were provided for.  On numerous occasions, Mr. Obama would ask me how my wife was doing (she was pregnant with our first child), and wished her the best.  I never, never saw him belittle another person, I never witnessed him do anything behind his wife's back..... For all of my political differences with Barack Obama, I will be the first to say that he is a very decent man.
Please note, that was prior to his time in the Oval Office.  I have not interacted with him since then, but everyone who I worked with who was affiliated with him said that he had not changed.

Florida Mailman Lands A Gyrocopter On Capitol Lawn, Hoping To Send An Anti-Corruption Message
Washington (CNN) A mailman from Florida wanted to make a big, bold point about the corruption that results from money in politics.
So  boarded a small personal aircraft called a "gyrocopter" and flew an hour from Maryland into restricted airspace over Washington and landed on the West Lawn of the Capitol building.
In tote: letters for every member of Congress urging them to reform campaign finance laws.
Hughes caused a melee Wednesday afternoon when he flew his gyrocopter, undetected by NORAD, to the nation's capitol. U.S. Capitol Police converged as he landed, and the White House said President Barack Obama was briefed on the situation.
It was a bizarre incident that riveted the city and shut down the U.S. Capitol for part of the day.
According to the U.S. Capitol Police, the aircraft was observed landing at about 1:30 p.m. and the operator -- Hughes -- was immediately taken into custody. A bomb squad investigated the gyrocopter but nothing hazardous was found. Law enforcement then took the gyrocopter to a secure location, according to the Capitol Police.
Hughes was arrested and transferred to central cellblock in Washington, with charges pending.
The wife of Doug Hughes confirmed to CNN that her husband was the pilot of the aircraft. A federal law enforcement officer also confirmed the name to CNN.

A rural letter carrier with a message

Hughes was first identified by the Tampa Bay Times, who had a reporter following him as he planned and executed his protest flight. CNN has also spoken to a friend of Hughes about the pilot's protest flight.
Hughes has been a rural letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service since 2003, according to a USPS official. The Postal Service Office of Inspector General is in contact with postal management on the matter. The official would not comment on Hughes' status with USPS following the incident, any disciplinary issues during employment or if anyone at USPS was aware of his plans.

The man's idea began to take shape after his grown son committed suicide by driving his car into another driver, Ben Montgomery, the Tampa Bay Times reporter who broke the story of the gyrocopter flight, said in an interview on CNN's "The Lead" with Jake Tapper.
"He told us that he felt like his son did something stupid, but he had made a point," he said. "He learned a lesson out of that. And it was, if you want to make a point, you've got to do something big, as sad as that seems."
Montgomery said Hughes knew he could have been killed -- in flight or by Capitol Police.
"He was ready for that. He's been thinking about this for 2.5 years. He's pictured every scenario you could possibly imagine," Montgomery said.

Hughes intended to deliver letters to each member of Congress lobbying them to reform campaign finance laws and get money out of politics.

Part Paul Revere, part P.T. Barnum

"And his mission was to do something big, the sort of mix of P.T. Barnum and Paul Revere, as he described himself," Montgomery said.
According to a law enforcement source, Hughes flew out of Gettysburg airport where apparently his vehicle and trailer are still located. The Secret Service has sent a team from a local field office to investigate.
Hughes was interviewed by the Secret Service in 2013 after a tip was received that he wanted to land his gyrocopter at the Capitol or the White House.
According to his interview with The Tampa Bay Times, Hughes said he was honest with his replies at the time, admitting he owned a gyrocopter.
The Times also reported the Florida mailman planned the flight to protest the Supreme Court decision in Citizens' United case and the influence of outside money in politics. He told the Times that he wanted to deliver mail to lawmakers outlining his complaints.

A tip to the local paper and calls to the Secret Service

The paper reported that it called Secret Service and Capitol Hill police before he flew. The reporter who spoke before the flight has been tweeting from Washington as the postal worker landed.
But the Secret Service denied that they had been notified.
"Media reports indicating that the Secret Service Tampa field office was alerted earlier today by a citizen to the subject's intentions are false," said spokesman Brian Leary in a statement.
"On October 4, 2013, the Secret Service obtained information from a concerned citizen about an individual [Hughes] purporting their desire to land a single manned aircraft on the grounds of the United States Capitol or the White House," Leary said. "That same day, the information was reported to law enforcement partners at the U.S. Capitol Police."
Leary said the next day, Hughes was interviewed by Secret Service agents in Ruskin, Florida, and "a complete and thorough investigation was conducted."
A friend of the pilot who says he's known the man for years tells CNN that "there's nothing on the helicopter that is dangerous" and that the this flight was meant to send a message to Congress about campaign finance reform.
"He has no weapons or anything else," said Michael Shanahan. "I know him personally. He's like a pitbull when he has an idea. He wants to wake up the country."
Shanahan said the pilot called him before he took off.
"He's upset that politicians can be bought and sold at auction, and I agree with him. That's the point he's trying [to make]" Shanahan said. "Happy he made it alive. I want to thank the people who decided not to kill him."
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the area was restricted airspace that Hughes did not get special permission to fly in.
Rep. Bennie Thompson, the top Democrat on the House Homeland Security Committee, was awaiting a briefing from the Capitol Police on the gyrocopter that landed on the West Front, but told CNN he had "deep concern" about it and the fact that the Secret Service knew about the pilot, Doug Hughes.
"Obviously we should have kept a little closer tabs on him, especially within the prohibited airspace," Thompson said.
"It shows that we still have some areas that are vulnerable and while we can have prohibited airspace it shows that certain kinds of flight patterns are still problematic, and a really bad guy could have caused significant harm if had been armed with explosives or things like that," he said.
The Mississippi Democrat also said he thought there was a break down in notifying members about a potential threat. He didn't get any kind of notice about the breach from the Capitol Police and learned about it when a staffer told him to look out his window at the West front.
The Capitol building lockdown has lifted and the Senate Sergeant-at-Arms told CNN that everything is under control. The Capitol Police said they had reopened temporary street closures and resumed normal operations.
At the moment of its landing, however, the Capitol was thrown into chaos.
Outside of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing room, a half-dozen police were running through the hallways, speaking into their radios about a lockdown. In the room waited Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, who had stopped by for a photo op and was posing a challenge for officers discussing safe ways to get the prime minister out of the building if necessary.
House Homeland Security Chairman Mike McCaul was on the first floor of the Capitol with aides when the building was briefly locked down, but he hadn't heard about the incident until CNN asked him. He decided to go outside and see the aircraft for himself, and Capitol Police let him through, despite the lockdown.

Gandhi's 10 Rules for Changing the World

by Henrik Edberg, syndicated from positivityblog.com, Jun 28, 2013
“You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.”
“The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world’s problem.”
“If I had no sense of humor, I would long ago have committed suicide.”
Mahatma Gandhi needs no long introduction. Everyone knows about the man who lead the Indian people to independence from British rule in 1947.
So let’s just move on to some of my favourite tips from Mahatma Gandhi.
      1. Change yourself.
“You must be the change you want to see in the world.”
“As human beings, our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world – that is the myth of the atomic age – as in being able to remake ourselves.”
If you change yourself you will change your world. If you change how you think then you will change how you feel and what actions you take. And so the world around you will change. Not only because you are now viewing your environment through new lenses of thoughts and emotions but also because the change within can allow you to take action in ways you wouldn’t have – or maybe even have thought about – while stuck in your old thought patterns.
And the problem with changing your outer world without changing yourself is thatyou will still be you when you reach that change you have strived for. You will still have your flaws, anger, negativity, self-sabotaging tendencies etc. intact.
And so in this new situation you will still not find what you hoped for since your mind is still seeping with that negative stuff. And if you get more without having some insight into and distance from your ego it may grow more powerful. Since your ego loves to divide things, to find enemies and to create separation it may start to try to create even more problems and conflicts in your life and world.
      2. You are in control.
“Nobody can hurt me without my permission.”
What you feel and how you react to something is always up to you. There may be a “normal” or a common way to react to different things. But that’s mostly just all it is.
You can choose your own thoughts, reactions and emotions to pretty much everything. You don’t have to freak out, overreact of even react in a negative way. Perhaps not every time or instantly. Sometimes a knee-jerk reaction just goes off. Or an old thought habit kicks in.
And as you realize that no-one outside of yourself can actually control how you feel you can start to incorporate this thinking into your daily life and develop it as a thought habit. A habit that you can grow stronger and stronger over time. Doing this makes life a whole lot easier and more pleasurable.
      3. Forgive and let it go.
“The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.”
“An eye for eye only ends up making the whole world blind.”
Fighting evil with evil won’t help anyone. And as said in the previous tip, you always choose how to react to something. When you can incorporate such a thought habit more and more into your life then you can react in a way that is more useful to you and others.
You realize that forgiving and letting go of the past will do you and the people in your world a great service. And spending your time in some negative memory won’t help you after you have learned the lessons you can learn from that experience. You’ll probably just cause yourself more suffering and paralyze yourself from taking action in this present moment.
If you don’t forgive then you let the past and another person to control how you feel. By forgiving you release yourself from those bonds. And then you can focus totally on, for instance, the next point.
      4. Without action you aren’t going anywhere.
“An ounce of practice is worth more than tons of preaching.”
Without taking action very little will be done. However, taking action can be hard and difficult. There can be much inner resistance.
And so you may resort to preaching, as Gandhi says. Or reading and studying endlessly. And feeling like you are moving forward. But getting little or no practical results in real life.
So, to really get where you want to go and to really understand yourself and your world you need to practice. Books can mostly just bring you knowledge. You have to take action and translate that knowledge into results and understanding.
You can check out a few effective tips to overcome this problem in How to Take More Action: 9 Powerful Tips. Or you can move on to the next point for more on the best tip for taking more action that I have found so far.
      5. Take care of this moment.
“I do not want to foresee the future. I am concerned with taking care of the present. God has given me no control over the moment following.”
The best way that I have found to overcome the inner resistance that often stops us from taking action is to stay in the present as much as possible and to be accepting.
Why? Well, when you are in the present moment you don’t worry about the next moment that you can’t control anyway. And the resistance to action that comes from you imagining negative future consequences – or reflecting on past failures – of your actions loses its power. And so it becomes easier to both take action and to keep your focus on this moment and perform better.
Have a look at 8 Ways to Return to the Present Moment for tips on how quickly step into the now. And remember that reconnecting with and staying in the now is a mental habit – a sort of muscle – that you grow. Over time it becomes more powerful and makes it easier to slip into the present moment.
      6. Everyone is human.
“I claim to be a simple individual liable to err like any other fellow mortal. I own, however, that I have humility enough to confess my errors and to retrace my steps.”
“It is unwise to be too sure of one’s own wisdom. It is healthy to be reminded that the strongest might weaken and the wisest might err.”
When you start to make myths out of people – even though they may have produced extraordinary results – you run the risk of becoming disconnected from them. You can start to feel like you could never achieve similar things that they did because they are so very different. So it’s important to keep in mind that everyone is just a human being no matter who they are.
And I think it’s important to remember that we are all human and prone to make mistakes. Holding people to unreasonable standards will only create more unnecessary conflicts in your world and negativity within you.
It’s also important to remember this to avoid falling into the pretty useless habit of beating yourself up over mistakes that you have made. And instead be able to see with clarity where you went wrong and what you can learn from your mistake. And then try again.
      7. Persist.
“First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.”
Be persistent. In time the opposition around you will fade and fall away. And your inner resistance and self-sabotaging tendencies that want to hold you back and keep you like you have always been will grow weaker.
Find what you really like to do. Then you’ll find the inner motivation to keep going, going and going. You can also find a lot of useful tips on how keep your motivation up in How to Get Out of a Motivational Slump and 25 Simple Ways to Motivate Yourself.
One reason Gandhi was so successful with his method of non-violence was because he and his followers were so persistent. They just didn’t give up.
Success or victory will seldom come as quickly as you would have liked it to. I think one of the reasons people don’t get what they want is simply because they give up too soon. The time they think an achievement will require isn’t the same amount of time it usually takes to achieve that goal. This faulty belief partly comes from the world we live in. A world full of magic pill solutions where advertising continually promises us that we can lose a lot of weight or earn a ton of money in just 30 days. You can read more about this in One Big Mistake a Whole Lot of People Make.
Finally, one useful tip to keep your persistence going is to listen to Gandhi’s third quote in this article and keep a sense of humor. It can lighten things up at the toughest of times.
      8. See the good in people and help them.
“I look only to the good qualities of men. Not being faultless myself, I won’t presume to probe into the faults of others.”
“Man becomes great exactly in the degree in which he works for the welfare of his fellow-men.”
“I suppose leadership at one time meant muscles; but today it means getting along with people.”
There is pretty much always something good in people. And things that may not be so good. But you can choose what things to focus on. And if you want improvement then focusing on the good in people is a useful choice. It also makes life easier for you as your world and relationships become more pleasant and positive.
And when you see the good in people it becomes easier to motivate yourself to be of service to them. By being of service to other people, by giving them value you not only make their lives better. Over time you tend to get what you give. And the people you help may feel more inclined to help other people. And so you, together, create an upward spiral of positive change that grows and becomes stronger.
By strengthening your social skills you can become a more influential person and make this upward spiral even stronger. A few articles that may provide you with useful advice in that department are Do You Make These 10 Mistakes in a Conversation? and Dale Carnegie’s Top 10 Tips for Improving Your Social Skills. Or you can just move on to the next tip.
      9. Be congruent, be authentic, be your true self.
“Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.”
“Always aim at complete harmony of thought and word and deed. Always aim at purifying your thoughts and everything will be well.”
I think that one of the best tips for improving your social skills is to behave in a congruent manner and communicate in an authentic way. People seem to really like authentic communication. And there is much inner enjoyment to be found when your thoughts, words and actions are aligned. You feel powerful and good about yourself.
When words and thoughts are aligned then that shows through in your communication. Because now you have your voice tonality and body language – some say they are over 90 percent of communication – in alignment with your words.
With these channels in alignment people tend to really listen to what you’re saying. You are communicating without incongruency, mixed messages or perhaps a sort of phoniness.
Also, if your actions aren’t in alignment with what you’re communicating then you start to hurt your own belief in what you can do. And other people’s belief in you too.
      10. Continue to grow and evolve.
”Constant development is the law of life, and a man who always tries to maintain his dogmas in order to appear consistent drives himself into a false position.”
You can pretty much always improve your skills, habits or re-evaluate your evaluations. You can gain deeper understanding of yourself and the world.
Sure, you may look inconsistent or like you don’t know what you are doing from time to time. You may have trouble to act congruently or to communicate authentically. But if you don’t then you will, as Gandhi says, drive yourself into a false position. A place where you try to uphold or cling to your old views to appear consistent while you realise within that something is wrong. It’s not a fun place to be. To choose to grow and evolve is a happier and more useful path to take.

      Greetings,

Here are Sunday's rehearsal recordings -- including two Christmas songs worked up for the occasion.

I know we're going to have big fun this Saturday and feel confident we'll give a great concert as well.

The only unknown is whether Mark will miss the gig due to a possible out-of-town obligation. (We all hope he gets free.)

Alger's brother, percussionist Gary S (whose Greenville band plays out three times a week) will sit in with us this Saturday... mostly on congas.

And!  Our two newest memebers -- Alex G and Benja N -- are both on board.

In addition to "Summertime" (and lots of top-flight harmonizing), Benja will sing lead on his Dad's brilliant composition, "Say It Ain't So." Benja will be accompanied by his Dad Dan N's stand-up bass.

      Alex' Christmas Song

      "Heart As Black As Night"

      "Eyes Of The World"
(My initial attempts at harmony are terrible, but afterward we decided I would sing refrains as written while Alger harmonizes "above me." This works perfectly.)

      "Rainy Night In Georgia'
      Take 1

      "Rainy Night In Georgia"
      Take 2
(Alger really liked the groove of this rendition.)

      "Rainy Night In Georgia"
      Take 3

      "Stand By Me"
Consecutive versions in C and D

We hope to see you at the tavern this Saturday, December 22nd. https://www.facebook.com/NashStreetTavern/

Sentencing Judge Tells Michael Flynn "You May Have Sold Your Country Out"

It Appears Flynn's Lie Tried To Cover Up Something Really BIG - And Quite Possibly Traitorous
A series of events punctuated most recently by a sentencing hearing gone awry suggest that whatever former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn was covering up when he lied about his Russia contacts, it was a whopper. During Tuesday's sentencing hearing for Flynn, U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan worked himself into a lather, noting his "disgust" and "disdain" for Flynn's criminal conduct.
“Arguably, that undermines everything this flag over here stands for," Sullivan charged, pointing to the American flag behind him. "Arguably, you sold your country out!”
In that instance Sullivan was referencing Flynn’s undisclosed work for Turkey during the campaign, but the judge’s pointed assertion was part of a lengthy scolding session he leveled at Flynn. Sullivan has a reputation for despising abuse of power and some Flynn allies, including Fox News, hyped the idea that the judge would take the FBI to task for its handling of Flynn’s case. Instead, Sullivan focused his ire squarely on Flynn. That's notable because while the judge doesn't know everything Special Counsel Robert Mueller knows, he is privy to more information about Flynn's case than the public. So what exactly did Sullivan find so agitating?
Perhaps it’s related to the fact that Donald Trump has never spoken ill of Flynn—not once—even though he has now sat for 19 interviews with Mueller and proven so useful that the special counsel recommended he receive zero jail time. Trump's kid-gloves treatment of Flynn extends all the way back to the earliest days of his administration when he encouraged then-FBI Director James Comey to end the investigation into Flynn. In fact, Trump has torched nearly everyone who has contributed to the ongoing investigations into him, his campaign, and his family business. Yet as Flynn was preparing for his sentencing hearing Tuesday morning, Trump issued him a decidedly sunny "good luck" tweet. So why the special treatment for Flynn?
The official 302 form summarizing the FBI's original interview with Flynn on January 24, 2017, is full of intriguing redactions. But as intelligence analyst Malcolm Nance pointed out, one thing comes through loud and clear—the nature of the questioning from FBI agents should have tipped off Flynn that the agency had listened to his calls with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. And yet, Flynn lied to them anyway.
This is a point former FBI assistant director Frank Figliuzzi also marveled over on MSNBC Tuesday. As a former director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, Flynn clearly would have known the FBI was surveilling those calls.
"I'm just thinking about the equation that had to go through his head," Figliuzzi said, reflecting back on the January day when FBI agents questioned Flynn. "He's a DIA director—he knows what they're listening to, and yet he decides it's worth getting caught lying to the FBI as long as I cover up my relationship with Russia. [...] So what's going on?"
In other words, what could possibly be so damning that, in the moment, Flynn calculated the lesser of two evils was to lie to the FBI full well knowing that he would ultimately be caught? Figliuzzi speculated there a may be "a flow of money" that the public doesn't know about yet that compromised him and potentially Trump.
The indicators all point to something big: an aggravated judge, a tamed Trump, two baffled intelligence professionals, and a former intelligence chief who sold himself out to the FBI.
As former Clinton Solicitor General Walter Dellinger told MSNBC's Chris Matthews later on Tuesday: "We have to ask ourselves, why is it that Mike Flynn was willing to take the risk of lying? What is behind this Russian involvement? It's always possible that there's less here than we think; and it's also possible this is the greatest crime in the history of America if Americans were working with Russians to determine the outcome of a presidential election."

Yes, Brexit was a bad choice.

From the beginning I've viewed Brexit as functionally impossible, unless Britain wanted an interminable period of hard suffering which I'm sure the addlepates never anticipated.

For populists, "purity of principle" is both sine qua non and summum bonum

If only one's ideals are lofty enough, God's Invisible Hand -- ex machina -- will provide all that is good.

It never occurs to them that 750 years of Dark Age ensued the Christian conversion of Rome.

There are times when the common root of "Christian" and "cretin" are apropos.

In the late '70s, I lived a year in Liverpool.

What surprised me most was the similarity between Britain and Uncle Sam's structured degradation -- if not brutalization -- of the working class.

Of course, the existence of National Health is an exception to this general rule.

But when National Health was founded in 1948 England was still infused with a sense of noblesse oblige and it is likely (perhaps even "decided") that National Health had a deep root in the solidarity created by Britain's class-defying "common cause" in World War II when -- battered by blitzkrieg in 1940-41 -- it seemed Hitler would annex the island as a permanent possession. (Foolishly, Adolf opened another front and "the rest was history.")

Given the woeful treatment of the working class in both countries -- mostly manifest in the assumption that workers would not educate themselves (and indeed did not need education) I see Brexit's "yes vote" and Trump's kindred "election" (largely by the uneducated) as thick-skulled Anglo-Saxon populism at its worst.

Funding is set to run out for the Homeland Security Department and a large swath of other federal agencies Friday at midnight.
