In the end, every human being makes a primary commitment to "self" or "other."
When making this core choice, the perennial dodge of American conservatives is to allege that omniscience and benevolence are fundamental characteristics of "the invisible hand." 
In effect, "the invisible hand" becomes a deity.

The logic of Republican selfishness goes like this...
"Only by complete dedication to myself can I unleash the invisible hand to take care of everyone else."

Deification of "the invisible hand" obviates all need for disciplined cultivation of virtue.
Instead, virtue is viewed as a spontaneous derivative of selfishness.
