Two children living in an apartment above a pet store zoo died from a boa constrictor that apparently got loose Monday in the Canadian town of Campbellton, the CBC reports.
The victims were reported to be five and seven years old. The exact cause of death was not immediately clear.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. says the snake is believed to have escaped from the Reptile Ocean pet store located below the victims' apartment.
The CBC, in its latest report, said a "large snake" was involved and that it was attempting to determine exactly what kind of reptile was involved.
"The city is in shock," said Deputy Mayor Ian Comeau, according to the CBC.
GlobalNews reports that police had responded to a call at the victims' apartment around 6 a.m. Monday.
The Reptile Ocean, on its Facebook page, calls itself a exotic pet store "open to the public for purchase and viewing."
Comeau noted that the snakes have only been legally imported since 2009.
The town of around 7,000 people is located in the province of New Brunswick in far eastern Canada.
